If Republican senators vote against Trump while Republican voters are still overwhelmingly behind Trump they will get destroyed in subsequent elections. They’ll all get primaried. Trump will personally campaign against them in the primaries, he’s obviously not the sort of person to let this go. Republican senators are simply not going to impeach Trump unless his support collapses, and I just don’t think this is going to move the needle on Trump’s support among Republicans.
There are lovely lobbying jobs for them to retire to. They can claim that they did the right thing and remain in public life if they make the right play here. If they don’t they better die quickly because in 4 years they’ll be completely ostracized.
There are no good options for these guys at this point. It’s the end of an era.
That’s looking like what’s going to happen hilariously. Biden is probably going to be collateral damage from this… and for that I’m actually super grateful. I’ve been very worried he might win the primary and then lose to Trump.
Part of me wants to believe this and wants to believe that they believe it, too. I want to believe they saw the ship sinking and have been stacking the courts and voting district lines so that even as their support collapses, they need an increasingly vanishingly small amount of support to remain in power, and now they’re at a tipping point where they’ve done all they can. It’s time to cut Trump before they lose that small amount of support outside of alwaysTrumpers critical to them maintaining power.
Well, I for one am glad to know it’s public knowledge Biden’s direct family has business entanglements with foreign billionaires. It shows the establishment is rotten to the core.
He’s done that before and failed, although to be fair his “personal campaigining” was literally just sending out his generic boilerplate “great on 2nd Amendment, border, and our vets” tweet so maybe things would change if he physically campaigns for someone.
Well this time he will have a hell of a story to tell: your supposedly Republican senator sold out Your President to the deep state (nasty, nasty guys). I was ready to fight for you and your senator ended that fight. Now it’s time to end him.
It used to be that journalists simply did not cover sex in Washington. It was considered to be completely off limits and it’s how JFK got away with banging Marilyn Monroe without anyone caring about it at all.
Since the Nixon administration there’s been a similar arrangement between journalists and our political leaders about money. Nobody has extensively covered the absolutely insane number of hilariously corrupt ways that our political class has cashed in on their power, from board positions with corporations, becoming a lobbyist with companies that they helped or could help in the future, getting amazing no work jobs for family and friends from special interests, trading on insider knowledge (to the extent that I’m sure many politicians have literally bought stock in companies and then directly helped them in massively material ways that impacted the value of their investment), the speaking circuit racket, and I’m sure many many other shady things that I can’t recall or am not aware of.
In a nutshell they sold us out for decades and it was career suicide for a journalist to cover it as long as what they were doing was technically legal… and it was because they were the ones who wrote the rules. Anything more subtle than a bag full of cash was allowed and totally standard.
Thankfully it’s looking like that era is coming to an end. Biden was a good candidate in the old era where nobody would talk about all the shady stuff he was connected to (but it was all legal!). In 2019 he’s incredibly vulnerable to all kinds of attacks about money, and that’s a good thing.
The 2016-2020 Donald J Trump presidency represents the last hurrah of that era and good fucking riddance. I expect to see all these old fossils who did this nonsense retire in droves over the next couple of cycles as their primary challengers fuck them up over all the many ways they screwed the public.
AOC was just the first primary challenger to win by bludgeoning her opponent with his own crookedness. Now that someone has done that successfully it’s pretty obvious that they are all vulnerable and their power is up for grabs.
Here’s what I don’t get. I thought Jettio made a good point, about how the US justice system is supposed to be used to investigate Biden’s corruption.
However…don’t they need evidence which requires finding out info from the the other party also involved? In this case, it would be a foreign govt.
So why is it unethical, or even a high crime, or merely illegal for the chief LE officer in the country, the president or anyone working under him in that capacity, to try to find out what went on or if the same person was being investigated by that country’s govt first? It seems preliminary to do this first, even if the DOJ did it.
Okay, so the corruption in question, just happens to be a political opponent in an upcoming election. So that bars a president from LE activities? Seems to me, to be a benefit of incumbancy. Perhaps, asking the Ukraine about it, was just preliminary ground work before getting our own Justice Dept involved.
I would think they’d need evidence to proceed first—evidence that requires testimony from other players involved, which just happens to be a foreign govt. I mean, it’s pretty hard to separate the two areas perfectly. Afterall, the president is both the chief LE officer in the country, over the Justice Dept as well as a candidate in an upcoming election.
