It’s a spectrum. But yeah. There are zero logical moral positions that anyone here would support where living a rich lifestyle, burning a ton of fossil fuel and tolerating the abuses of our governments while they do things which will directly lead to the deaths of billions is morally defensible.

I have not come around on your original take before the sidetrack which was we should pay presidents more money. If anything they should get paid less since all modern presidents seem to do pretty good when they get out. Now if you wanted to stop their soft grifting when they get out a pay raise seems fair but otherwise I’m not sure why raising their pay makes sense.
Duty Free Shopping - what a nonsense - the idea that you don’t tax items for export taken to clown like levels. All those locally produced products filling those duty-free shops.
However philanthropic Chuck was it seems to me he shouldn’t have got all this wealth to begin with.

You are conflating our various parallel discussions.
Today’s was are all rich people corrupt.
Yesterday was there is nothing inherently immoral about being paid a lot for speeches once a civil servant leaves office. Paying presidents more was only a tiny part of that discussion.
You were in the right about ‘not all rich people are corrupt’. You were massively wrong about it not being inherently immoral for politicians to make millions of dollars giving speeches to corporate clients who are either paying you back for something you did while in office or want something from you in the future.
A lot of people ITT want to eat the rich, and I get the sentiment, but the reality is that Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have done literally thousands of times more for humanity than all of us put together… because they actually are giving away their fortunes.
If every billionaire was going to give all the money away with the goal of making the maximum positive change possible in the world the world would be a much better place. Unfortunately most of them aren’t doing that, and a solid majority of them are busy doing the opposite.

This is the definition I was and am operating under

I’m not conflating anything. I’m saying I disagree with what you originally wrote before all the tangents which is presidents should get paid more. They should get paid less.
Remember back on 2+2 if the Trump thread got AIDS’d by a derail, those posts got excised into a new thread? Pepperidge farm remebers. Seems like a wealth and corruption thread is appropriate here.

In a generic thread like this they’re not so bad.
In a thread titled, “How to Pick up a Naked 10 Pin,” when there’s a derail about syntax the thread loses value quickly.
Yea just watch Shark Tank. You got a guy like Kevin O’Leary nickeling and diming people for less money than he makes in 1 hour of interest. And he’s openly proud of it.
And yea I get it’s just a TV show. But the greed that’s only seen with wealth comes out.

That’s what made them successful in the first place. It has to consume your being to get that rich. You must have very little empathy. It’s not too hard to understand why they can’t just pivot and turn it off - it’s always worked for them.
There’s a ton of evidence that it’s not just about selection. Wealth and power makes people worse.
This Atlantic article was one of those which changes how you view the world. I re-read it every year or so.
