The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: ORANGE Gettin' PEACHed, Nation Goes BANANAS

ITT sure

This is probably a bad idea because Republicans are going to say any impeachment proceedings are purely political anyway and anything the Dems do that makes that seem true is shooting themselves in the foot.

The closest example we have to go on is Nixon, and the wiki about the impeachment hearings against him already has a lot of parallels to what’s currently happening, the biggest one to me is:

That was about 7 months after the Senate hearings started, and what ended up getting the public on board with impeachment was:

  • Administration officials admitting the White House had recordings of everything Nixon had done in the Oval Office at a televised hearing
  • The Special Prosecutor subpoenaing the tapes and being denied by Nixon claiming executive privilege
  • The Saturday Night Massacre where Nixon ordered his AG and Deputy AG to fire the Special Prosecutor and they resigned instead, leading to Robert Bork firing the Special Prosecutor and appointing a new one
  • Trying to get the new Special Prosecutor and the Senate investigators to chill, the White House released the “expletive deleted” transcripts
  • Finally the executive privilege claims were heard by the Supreme Court who unanimously ruled Nixon had no claims of privilege and the tapes were released July 30th, 1974. On August 5th the “Smoking Gun” tape where Nixon said “All right, fine, I understand it all” to someone saying the FBI investigation was going in “directions we don’t want it to go”

The transcripts were a big deal then but if we look at the reaction now it’s downright quaint:

Basically the problem seems to be that everything that got the public worked up about Nixon has already been done by Trump to no response.

Holy fuck

Today I learned that nunnehi’s impeachment analysis is fact-based, and mine is entirely about feels. :man_shrugging:

Quotes from people actually involved=fact based

Quotes from inside your own head=‘feels’. You’re better than this.

Quotes from politicians = fact based?

Why do you bother with any of this? You’re a nihilist man, just admit it.

If anything, my closest friends often tell me I’m too optimistic about various things - women I’m dating, sports teams I root for, politics in the past. I’m seeing it for what it is.

For God’s sake man, we’re putting kids in cages, families in concentration camps, banning Muslims, sentencing kids to death by deporting them despite medical conditions, the administration is flaunting subpoenas left and right, this guy’s been impeachable since Day 1 and the Dems haven’t made a single strong move since they took the House, the Dems promised us tax returns on Day 1 if they took the House and it’s been like eight months with nothing.

They’re pissing on us and you’re telling us it’s a delightful mist drifting in off the beautiful ocean thanks to the lovely tropical breeze. I’m just reminding you that, nope, it’s yellow.

And YET, you’re advocating no one’s doing anything, it appears you don’t want to do anything, and are saying every politician is lying. That’s nihilistic. There are a whole lot of people in Congress who are actually trying to do things about what you’re talking about, but you ignore them, downplay their significance, whatever.

You aren’t even remotely optimistic, in my opinion. Basically saying that the Democratic Party is exactly Trump and that its leaders will go on TV or be interviewed by newspapers and lie exactly like Trump is messed up. You’re part of that group now that says both sides are the same, whether you want to believe it or not.

And if you somehow think that I’m downplaying anything, you can fuck right off with that. Your mischaracterizations and gaslighting of me are incessant.

I’m not advocating for doing nothing, I’m telling you what’s happening. A lot of the Democratic politicians aren’t lying outright about this, they’re just wording it in ways that allow people who are being naive or delusional to interpret it the way they want.

Leadership runs the show, specifically Pelosi.

Not at all what I’ve said. The Democrats are just cowardly/incompetent on this. They don’t have the guts to stand up to Pelosi (at least they haven’t shown it so far), and they’re using the wrong strategy politically.

But I’ll go ahead and let you have the last word, I won’t respond ITT after this post, because someone has to be capable of ending this argument for now… So go ahead and tell everyone how pessimistic my feels-based take is, and how I’m detached from reality while you’re the Edward R. Murrow of impeachment analysis, and THIS time is the time the Democrats aren’t going to pull the football away on you like Lucy and Charlie Brown.

Please, please, please take this to the Pelosi thread.

They are going to make the “its political” argument no matter when we impeach him.

I think the reason the public can be brought around is because we havn’t had hearings yet.

Given the senate is in enemy hands, the “trial” should be conducted in the house.

Having an impeachment vote , kinda takes the house out of action, which i think is bad.

Lots of high profile hearings over next year or so, in the house.
Of course the courts are involved, so it kinda revolves around when rulings come down.

These hearing , like with the nixon hearings, can change public opinion.

Just this pulled quote right here shows how much of an asshole you are. I sincerely hope I’m right about whatever happens, just to watch you eat this pile of shit you spewed on me for months for ZERO reason. I mean what in the actual fuck are you trying to accomplish with what you’re doing here in relation to this? And at this point, I couldn’t care less if I’m wrong about timelines or what would happen, I’m absolutely on the right side of history on this and that is not going to change. Your original idea was just like Pelosi’s, just so you can remember that.

Good job having this massive argument 2-3 effing days before the people return from a SIX week recess. We even bumped the thread where you could talk about this for real, but you just had to keep it here. Yes, I’m the bad guy.

Are we doing alright on the Census question? You did a debate exactly like this over that.

Sorry for the outburst. I don’t believe that anyone in this particular pissing match is an idiot or bully and wish you wouldn’t imply they are in your replies. You lose credibility when you go there. The beauty of written replies is that you can read them, consider them, and delete them when they cross the line. Again, I apologize for the name calling.

I appreciate you saying this.

If you are the perpetual target of someone who clearly is intending to silence your views, that’s a bully. Cuse doesn’t think he’s a bully, but he is absolutely bullying me, and has been doing it for months. He does it in the form of drive by spewings intended to ‘embarrass’ me. He rarely ever engages me with an argument that we can break down, and just insults me continuously. He thinks it’s lighthearted. It for sure is not. To say that I don’t have the right to feel that way about his continuous behavior like this for probably close to 4 months despite asking him to stop it numerous times is actually condoning his behavior.

Fathers and Sons by Turgenev is solid.

Cuse responds to the substance of your post and you call him an asshole and he is the bully.
