Here’s my attempt at Cliff’s for the day:
Trump started speaking around 11 to thousands. Played all the hits, “will never concede,” “it’s time to fight,” etc. Went on for about 2 hours.
At 1 Pence started opening envelopes and reading electors. Going alphabetically, he got to Arizona, asked for objections, and got one. He formally called for the houses to debate.
Meanwhile the crowd marches from the ellipse, where Trump’s speech was, to the Capitol.
Ted Cruz gave his snivelling version of how he’s just standing up for the people who have questions.
Somewhat surprisingly, Mitch went the other way, upheld certification, and generally rebuked Trump.
Around this point, the barricades were breached and terrorists stormed the Capitol, and all hell breaks loose. Elected officials were safely evacuated, but they broke a window and got in, and there are all kinds of photos of people impudently traipsing all over the chamber, stealing stuff, and hanging Nazi/Confederate flags, etc.
Mayor sets a 6 pm curfew.
At least one person, presumably a rioter, got shot and is dead.
Trump sent out two tweets mildly rebuking violence and backing the blue.
Biden goes live, condemns the chaos, and chastens Trump to step up. Then some unnecessary fluff about what America can accomplish, together.
Within minutes, Trump tweets a 1 minute video where he acknowledges in the first 7 seconds that everyone knows the election was stolen, but everyone needs to go home.
Some chatter that Trump might be impeached.
That’s the gist of it.
