This was a super successful attempted coup. If I were a right-winger hoping for the violent overthrow of the US government I’d be thrilled and thinking that it’s going to be much easier than I’d have ever dared imagine.

Could be their intent (or lack of it), but attempting to stop him from running in 2024 is worth it.

Right. People have to stop being distracted by the clownish nature of some of the people there and see this as the real threat and danger it was and could be in the future.

I totally agree, but I also understand the instinct to retreat psychologically to a safer place. Oh, they were just a bunch of goofballs? That feels very comforting.

if he’s impeached with no senate trial, ie no acquittal, that might be enough to keep him off the ballot at least in some places. it would definitely get litigated, and hopefully ruled against trmp
if only there’s some big day they might consider storming coming up very soon with a wide open area of the president with traditionally big crowds and all the people they don’t like in the same place at the same time
I thought about that too but a Republican voting for impeachment is a lock to be primaried when they run for reelection.
And punishment won’t much matter. The important thing is the lack of response and the demonstration that police and the military may back off. If they win the take over, they will be the ones deciding who gets punished. Or at least that all seems like a more realistic possibility now.

I don’t think so. The American President just tried to overthrow the government in a coup. You can’t not impeach him.
