The Presidency of Donald J. Trump, Episode VII: We Are All Going To Die, Thanks Obama!

I guess I’m just reluctant to think of it in absolutes. A smaller portion of young people vote, but that doesn’t mean it is strategically smart to offer them nothing.

No. 40% want to hear exactly this. And if he can fire them up enough so that every of them will show up on election day, then he wins. Obviously, he won’t get 100% turnout from that subgroup, but it won’t be for lack of trying.

I do t think this is the right take. This is one situation where pointing out Trump is a clown is good because he’s failing at things that actually affect his base in a way that is tangible to them. Like, yelling about kids in cages is kind of a waste because Trump’s voters like like that. But this is one instance where you can show that his incompetence and indifference to the plight of regular people is dangerous and disastrous. A China travel ban may or may not be racist in this context, but let’s say it is, he couldn’t even do that right, he couldn’t keep ya safe, which was supposed to be his thing. Hammer him on that, the right can’t deny it, so it demoralizes them, and it reminds people that virtually anyone would do a better job because they will at least put capable public servants in charge of things that matter.

Yo - how is Japan doing these days?

OMFG

Well yeah I can read all that. I mean as Unstuck’s Japan reporter on the street - any insight into what’s working/not working?

There was a post in the covid thread that hospitals are getting full - but when you read the article a lot of that seems to be due to the govt’s plan to quarantine everyone who tests positive at a hospital.

Lots of mixed signals here.

The gov has declared a nationwide emergency and called for everyone to avoid going out as much as possible, for places of business to reduce hours or close, and for employees to WFH to the extent possible. But according to Japanese law, there can be no forced lock down. The decision to close schools is left to municipalities; the decision to allow employees to stay home is left to business owners.

On one level, people are taking it much more seriously. Mask penetration is higher than ever. More people are staying home.

But there are still reports of popular destinations being full of people on the weekends. Rush hour commuting in Tokyo is down, but still a mass of people traveling together in close confines every day.

And a new concern looms. The end of this month will be the start of Japan’s Golden Week–its longest stretch of holidays, when the entire country basically goes on vacation. Though the government has called for people to refrain from traveling, of course many still will.

Specifically, many Tokyoites use GW as a time to go back and visit their hometowns. That means lots of infected people bringing the virus from Tokyo to areas free thus far of infection.

So to sum it up, I expect things to get considerably worse here before they get better.

I’d still rather be here than in the U.S. though.

Yep. This! This guys a Republican bragging about how he’s gonna give everyone free stuff.
But if it was the other way he’d be screaming blue murder!

Dems really, really, really, really are massive losers at messaging.

Kinda got me thinking. If a dem was president and republicans still had the senate they legit wouldn’t pass anything without massive super awful stipulations. Possibly not even then.

At that point I’d be ready for murder, and most people would blame the president.
