I’ll do you one better… The stuff Trump wants to fight the coronavirus, you know, a fucking tax cut, would have to start in the House anyway.
The Democrats should pass a bill with:
- Payroll Tax Cut for the Working and Middle Class
- Tax Increase on the 1% to Offset It, which goes directly into the Social Security fund
- Whatever it takes to get all the test kits out, require that the standards for testing be loosened as soon as X test kits are available, allow the sale directly from private companies to states and from state to state.
- Additional funding to fight the coronavirus
- Subsidize paid time off for people with underlying health issues, 60+, etc.
- Sweeping election security provisions that are packaged under a plan to allow people to vote by mail in all 50 states permanently going forward.
They should market #6 as a direct response to coronavirus, touting how easy it is to catch the virus in polling places. But they should incorporate provisions that expand the electorate in the future by making it easier to vote, and none of it should have a sunset.
When the GOP demands a “clean bill” they should say “This is a clean bill. Everything is tied to the coronavirus and responding to handle the public health crisis, the financial and economic implications on the working and middle class, and to protect our democracy and elections from the effects of the disease. STFU and pass it, we’re going on a 2 week recess immediately because our job is done and our time is best spent in our districts helping local officials coordinate.”
Mic drop, walk out. The GOP will try to play hardball for 2-3 days, but when their own base starts getting severe cases of coronavirus, they’ll have no choice. Then hammer them over the head with their delay in November and rip them to shreds for not acting quickly for the American people.

This is great. Unfortunately the people on this board are much more competent in coming up with ideas like this than our party is. Actually following through with such a good idea seems like an impossibility for our leadership also.
Hopefully this thing burns itself out by the general election. I do worry about a move to delay or cancel it.
Of course if it seasonal then round 2 would be Hitting stride in October.

The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.
The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus.
Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.
“We had some very critical people who did not have security clearances who could not go,” one official said. “These should not be classified meetings. It was unnecessary.”
The sources said the National Security Council (NSC), which advises the president on security issues, ordered the classification.”This came directly from the White House,” one official said.
