Some sequence change may impact virulence (infection rate, mortality), some antigen structure (what our antibodies responid to), some both virulence and antigen, and some neither.

Some speculation that children are less impacted because their immune systems are constantly seeing a variety of mild coronovirus strains and have at least some cross reactivity and protection.

Reinfection has been described. Whether that is viral evolution or a poor immune response is unclear from what Ive seen so far.

I don’t know if I’d state it so strongly (IN ALL CAPS) but I’ll admit I’m not feeling enthusiastic about the idea.

Fatboy, can we hold off and do a meetup when this coronavirus thing calms down?

I’ve been on a self imposed Trump media blackout.

How is he fucking up this virus response?

Don’t take this personally, but if you want to be taken seriously with this kind of info, you should state your own credentials or give sources. If you’ve done that elsewhere I apologize.

Also, in-depth discussion of COVID-19 would probably fit better in the dedicated thread.

Recent gaffe is that he told people its super cool to go to work if you have symptoms.

I don’t mean to get hyper-technical, but I think calling that a “gaffe” is overly generous.

Youre right. Please replace all instances of gaffe in my previous post with “stupid insane fucking thing to say from a mouthebreathing fuck face who is somehow our goddamn president WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENENING!”

Re credentials

Microbiology and public health degree, though I work in the field of industrial fermentation, not the health arena. I have read dozens of books on the history of disease including several on the 1918 flu covering both the science and political response.

So I know the ABCs of virology and immunology much more than the average person but I’m not an up to date subject matter expert.

I’ve battled bacterial viruses (phage) and do have first hand experience with how fast they can evolve.

I try hard not overstate my knowledge.

My main points have more to the public health aspect. Anything in the low single digit lethality x high infection rate is probably going to kill more than something with high lethality and low infection rate (eg blood borne Ebola).

Trump is going to help the spread with what he is saying, and in a vulnerable population (olds). Kind of ironic. Will be really ironic if he gets it because he keeps having his rallies. I bet he will shut down all contact w the public very soon.

It’s like a rebuy. Another 10k post thread to hopefully turn it all around.
