The Presidency of Donald J. Trump, Episode VI: No Witnesses, One Defector, No Checks or Balances

Fair enough. I will chamber my words until we see one way or another.

Have you noticed national Dems have been getting their asses kicked lately?

2018 went fairly well.

2020 will be another important data point.

2018 was a tidal wave of votes pouring in after the Dem candidates adopted the Republican position on social issues, right?

We are in agreement here. It’s the third one that interests me.

What are some strategies you think would be effective to win such a debate? Perhaps it would help to posit one specific politician against another in a certain situation? Say Bernie vs Trump in a debate? Or anyone else you desire.

I hope this doesn’t come across as though I’m trying to dunk on you or anything. I think there’s a chance for meaningful discourse here and am interested in your ideas (or anyone else’s).

For example, to my reading you keep deriding pivot as though that is the same thing as avoidance. It is not. In debate, one strategy to crush the other person’s point is to provide a succinct response and then make a bigger emotional point. This makes the audience FEEL like the opponent’s point was absurd. Then they will come up with their own arguments to support that feeling.

Most people experience life as a kind of subconscious, visceral narrative. We feel things and then make sense of them. Evoking those feelings in political opponents is part of how we change minds.

We know the arguments the GOP lays out for abortion are stupid and cruel. What would you want a politician to say to evoke that feeling? Some will feel so threatened that they’ll grind their heels in further, but I’d argue those people weren’t going to be convinced by anything. Logic would be an even worse strategy.

No no no, it was after they avoided talking about them entirely

No one is advocating for that. On my end at least this is 100% about messaging. I think GOP candidates love using wedge issues that cost us votes.

In that vein I wonder what we could use to wedge their base the same way?

I’ll just say one last post before I head off to dinner.

  1. Obviously, candidates and parties have to have priorities. It’s impossible to pick every battle.

  2. It’s easy for all of us (myself included) to think that the battles that would help us the most are both the most important and (conveniently) the most popular. It’s probably good to challenge that assumption pretty rigorously.

How do you counter that extreme language aside from saying, “Uhh…no.”? I mean they’re conflating abortion with murdering newborn babies and then claiming that Democrats support that. There are way too many deplorables who would vote for anybody so long as they presented themselves as pro-life.

Maybe we should target the majority of voters who don’t feel the way? What is this nonsense that Dems should gaf about who evangelicals vote for?

“Do you know what’s truly evil?” Then launch into whatever you want.

Think of the audience. What’s even more evil than abortion?! Rationally that’s a stupid question (and is not even the actual question), but for people addicted to outrage and the APPEARANCE of nobility, the implication of simply asking “What’s truly evil?” is almost irresistible.

He’s even lying about this

One republican voted yes on both counts. Representative from Michigan

Ok, one more quick post. I don’t have all the talking points worked out, but the basic idea is that you need to make a positive case in favor of legal abortion.

  • “my opponent wants to send us back to the era of back alley abortions where women were dying from botched procedures”

  • Candidate Trump stated that women who had an abortion should be subject to criminal penalties. Since you share his belief that abortion is murder, how much jail time would you give to a woman who got an abortion or the doctor who performed one?

  • Don’t be afraid to dox any “pro life” politician that paid for an abortion for their mistress

  • tell the stories of women who were brought up on homicide charges after miscarriages

  • and, if you want a “pivot” point out the devastating economic consequences of unwanted pregnancies.

Campaigning for women’s rights is a good thing. But with the anti-abortion laws being passed and not making too many waves among the anti-Trumpers, I don’t see it as big of an issue as it used to be.

Things like immigration, the economy, and healthcare are bigger things now. Well, that is to most people. Hardcore deplorables are still griping over Kaepernick kneeling.

I like this.

“That’s what he says. But do you know what’s truly evil? What he actually DOES.” And then bring up women brought up on homicide charges after miscarriages.

Thanks for your suggestions! Interested in your other ideas if you come back later with some.
