If you look at articles from around that period, you of course see him keeping company with one or two people who have since gone to prison for Trump.

I think it makes sense. If the crusade against Russia in sport is legitimate then it’s because it was something done systematically by Russian sports associations. Otherwise plenty of countries have had multiple athletes in multiple sports who have cheated, often over many years. Then, if that is the case, if an athlete who isn’t part of the Russian sport structure can show they haven’t cheated, good for them and let them in.
