I think that they’re trying to show that our strike didn’t unify the Iranian people into supporting the regime against the US. “They aren’t mad at us, so clearly they didn’t like the guy either, so it’s a good thing that we took him out.”
It’s sort of a nod towards supporting regime change, but I think it’s more directed at US politics to counter what some liberals were saying a few days ago about how just before the strike there had been anti-regime protests and then, after the assassination, the larger crowds were mourning Soulemani and unifying Iran behind the government.
