OTOH, Detroit pensioners with “Guaranteed” pension rights are puking up just short of 1K a month for their health benefits because Detroit is flat-ass broke. How the hell Chicago/Illinois are going to pay off those sweet pension dollars is beyond impossible, because the douche politicians and union scumbags sold their members down the river decades ago. Chicago has about 30% fewer people than it did in 1950. Detroit has about 60% fewer people. I imagine that alone has made pensions for city workers pretty impossible to sustain.

Detroit is a whole different mess. Chicago - not much of an excuse. Population has been stable within a point or 2 percentwise since 1990 at least. The useless politicians would give away benefits up the ass year after year so they didn’t have to give “raises” in terms of pay. The union leadership (also useless) went along with early retirement/better bennies instead of cash, so they could go back to their members with “job well done” never minding that none of this could go on forever. Which it didn’t of course. The whole fucking system is broke, they’ve been bumping property taxes/city and county taxes and there isn’t any way in hell they’re going to be able to pay for it. Chicago is a whole circle of screwed, and unlike Detroit, they pretty much did it to them selves.

Well when they pay not even 10% of what they get out and require new people to chip in to benefit them–that’s called a ponzi scheme. and they literally put it in the state constitution (Illinois) so everyone’s fucked because it’s a political land mine despite the obviousness of needing drastic changes (ie, lots of those people will end up with a million dollars for doing nothing all on everyone else’s dime need to GTFO but they all vote and you know damn well they all whine about other people getting “welfare”).

If orange babyhands loses in 2020, there’s a good chance he is the GOP nominee again in 2024. If he wins, the GOP nominee in 2024 is whoever he wants. Could be his scumbag son, could be Ivanka. Could be someone like Hannity. It’ll be a shit show. If D’s could squeak out a senate majority and do things right (blow up the senate filibuster, pass auto voter registration, undo all the crazy R gerrymandering, etc), the GOP would never have any power again.

From what I recall, Josh Hawley is a horrifying combination of Trumpian policies but with an air of competence (and actual youth). Whether it’s him or someone like him, it seems like that is going to be the Republican push going forward in 2024.

Seems incredibly unlikely to me. Trump will be old and won’t control Fox News or any other levers of power when he’s out of office. It’s more likely that he’s President for life than he loses in 2020 and is the nominee in 2024.
