No one fucking cares about this shit. The centrist Dems have been getting played my whole life, they’ve never figured it out. Republicans accuse the Dems of being unpatriotic, not supporting the troops, yadda yadda. All the magnetic bumper stickers and jingoistic bullshit, it’s all a facade.
Post-9/11, the Dems got cowed into thinking that they had to go into full SUPPORT THE TROOPS! mode or else they’d get clobbered. So they sent in a war hero (Reporting for duty!) vs a clown who used his connections to stay out of Vietnam and the Dems got clobbered anyway. Turns out that the Republican base doesn’t actually care about all this “respect the troops” bullshit, they enthusiastically voted for Trump. The left isn’t into all this military pageantry, either, tbqh.
The only people who actually care about the legacy of St. John McCain are Acela-belt Dems and Lincoln Project NeverTrumper dipshits. Huge fucking lol at Maggie Haberman and Jennifer Rubin thinking this is going to move the needle.

Then Joe Biden will cut in with some rah-rah patriotic shit and tell us that John McCain was just one of the most decent men who ever lived, and the Lincoln Project chuds will pop boners.

Also a lock that Biden sadly brings up Beau (who served as a JAG and also in the Delaware National Guard) and Trump mocks Biden for showing emotion while Don Jr. tweets that it’s a shame that Beau died instead of Hunter.

None of this will matter. Trump will cry fake news. He will say no one supports the military more than he does. He will stage a press conference with world war 2 vets. They will be sitting in wheelchairs with MAGA hats on while their boomer kids say how thankful they are for Trump.

The Democrats all went whole-hog pro-war after 9/11 because they thought they’d be accused of being cowards who don’t support the troops. Signed off on war authorizations and the Patriot Act and all that dumb buillshit. And then SPOILER ALERT the Republicans still accused them of being anti-war traitors who hate the troops.
Then Trump comes in with this great judo-flip move where he calls the Democrats war-mongers (He has a valid point here!) and all the Dems can do is react like shockedpikachu.gif. Man, they all get played over and over. Their only play is to bring the bones of St. John McCain out of the reliquary and shake them around to inspire the Dems. We Dems all loved John McCain, right? We will rush to the voting booth to defend his honor?

Really considering taking a break from following this shit, like when people ask me about my interest in American politics I have two answers: 1) it’s kind of like people who like reading horrifying true crime stories, 2) I like understanding the human psyche, how it works, what really motivates people. Now there’s no subtext left at all, it’s just Trump tweeting fascism at a five-year-old level like “The Do-Nothing Democrats have allowed crime to run rampant in their Cities! They have no respect for Our Country and Our Flag! They are Bad People!”. It’s honestly fucking degrading to even bear witness to this spectacle right now. There’s nothing to do but wait and see whether lead levels in the 1970s were or were not quite sufficient to atrophy the brains of Boomers to the extent that self-governance is impossible. It lacks both the vicious cunning of Dick Cheney and the pure, diamond-hard psychopathy of like Joe Arpaio. It’s just sad and repulsive.

The random capital letters is something that still fascinates me actually, because when I see that my reaction is “oh, he’s speaking to me like I’m a child. This is literally a ploy aimed at toddler-level intelligence”. There are a few theories I have about why this doesn’t turn off Trump fans:
