The Pozzidency of Donald J. Trump: Typhoid Donnie's Slow Hypoxic Demise **Sweat Thread** (updated 100x/minute)

An eventual and hedged comment like Pyat’s would be fine. My real objection is with Buttigieg’s message.

You could even say something Obama-like about even the worst people still being human beings and we should show them some compassion and rise above their hatred.

Really, he had so many options to choose from and just went with that. Pete is fucking appallingly vacuous.

“The presidents handling of the corona virus” would be better.

It does seem very much like a “look how mature I am” moment for people like Pete, but whatever. There are pretty significant downsides to having political figures publicly declare that they hope their opponents die. That shit results in people mailing bombs to politicians etc.

Why limit best wishes to just those he’s endangered via COVID, you monster?!

It’s a little tricky. Obviously he deserves death, but what are the electoral impacts of Trump dying or being hospitalized right now? Ideally he would have gotten sick and died after Election Day.

Come on. No one’s arguing for this.

Sure, fair enough. I am just saying that I understand the impulse of the politicians to try to high road this.

That I understand that there are a range of motives at play, some very understandable and appropriate and some more self serving.

Also I guess on Level 0 we are, in fact, strictly better people than those on the other side and here’s yet another example of that and why you should not vote for them or stay home but rather vote for us instead.

I feel like this sub-thread is just another example of us forgetting that the vast majority of the electorate doesn’t think about this stuff the way we do.

Meh, there’s plenty of low-info voters out there who care about optics and civility and shit. A professional “thoughts and prayers” in spots like this seems like an optimal play.

Yes, taking the high road works against people with some sense of shame but here it’s basically electoral suicide.

I prefer to imagine it being inserted into his rectum and shattering when it meets his teeth.

They’ve been doing it since Obama and their market share has been shrinking ever since, which is why they keep finding new and more creative ways to cheat. The only fucking reason(s) we even still have to talk about them is because of the bullshit structural advantages they have built in thanks to the Senate and the EC.

For fuck’s sake, Dubya stood up and defended the Muslim community with the god damn World Trade Center still smoldering and won a second term.

If you don’t provide concrete examples of how you’re better than the other guy, I’m not sure how people are supposed to know you are better.

So far the only best wishes tweets I’ve seen from European leaders have come from Johnson and his gang and various Eastern European deplorables.

Almost nothing is as consistent in contemporary conservatism as not giving a shit about something until it becomes a personal threat.

This feels like the start of civil war to me.

I don’t like this. If the election was going to be stolen then I’m not sure this gets us off the hook.

I don’t think there’s any need to go out of one’s way to wish the President well. If pressed, of course a politician should say, “That’s a silly question. Of course I wish anyone afflicted by this terrible blah blah blah.”

More importantly, Dems need to assume Trump is gonna beat this and claim Superman. They need to be way out ahead on messaging and keep beating the drum that Trump is recovered because of access to health care that should be available to all Americans, and that it just highlights the ghoulishness of giddily announcing the end of the ACA, etc.

The health care angle has to be amplified like the woofers in Masta Ace’s jeep.

…is Trump taking Hydroxychloroquin now?

“I really don’t care. Do u?” seems an appropriate response if asked.
