The Pets of Unstuck

Took our little guy out today and he met an absolute nutter of a play bud.

They were loving it.

Our 5mo pup is battling two annoyances right now: killer allergies and what I guess is a stopped up anal gland? Allergy-wise it seems like benadryl is the solution, pending a visit to our vet. The butt stuff we’re also waiting for the vet visit on, but it’s gonna be tougher to wait that one out. Her butt smells slightly fishy and at least once she’s left some dark discharge where she’s been laying. I’ve watched some of the videos on how to express those glands and it looks… not pleasant.

Our dog needs regular anal gland emptying, the vets does it once a year and that seems to take care of it. Its super gross.

The chihuahua goes every two months. The offered to teach us and we said nfw. Happy to spend the 20 bucks (?) every two months.

Our dog has that done once in a while. I’ve never seen it or even a picture of it and intend to keep it that way.

We call it Leaky Butt - it smells like hot pennies.

Your vet can express the gland, it’s easy and painless (for the dog). We watched a YouTube video on how to do it at home and decided nnnnnnnope, let’s have the vet do it.

I figure I should give an update in picture form: same bed but with a lot less room now!

Phoebe just hit 5 months and ~30lbs and is doing really well, though obviously there are occasional growing pains and minor health issues. She’s mastered basic commands, though isn’t as automatic when there are a lot of distractions. Leash training is our current project–she likes to pull and jump after eeeverything, but she’s made huge improvements since we started to be more deliberate with our walks a few weeks ago.

Still a ton of work but definitely a positive in what has been a pretty shitty few months. Dogs are pretty great.

Edit: I should add that we were able to link up with some of her siblings (all rescued from Mississippi, most ended up in the DC area). Two of them got DNA tests. We were told she was a “bluetick coonhound mix” so it was a mild surprise when both siblings got 0% bluetick, and barely any hound (a tiny bit of beagle). Instead both results had a lot of german shorthair pointer and, as expected, lab. The lab explains the coat and ears and the pointer explains where these long-ass legs came from!

I think doggie DNA tests are fine for the primary breed. I’m suspect the accuracy goes down when they say 10% this or that.

I’m mean Poppy’s came out 0% badass. That’s not possible.

$100 DNA tests are up there with CBD and moon crystals. :)

Yea I’m not going to place bets on the precise percentages, but the fact that two siblings got tests from two different companies and both came back with GSP and lab as the clear top two makes me pretty confident that those are the dominant breeds (which also aligns with her appearance and that of her siblings).

I don’t disagree, but I own less than 50% of the voting stock in my house.

Olive (white) has been feeling bad the last few days. Found out she has a mass on her spleen and is having an emergency splenectomy tonight. Good vibes appreciated.

No calculation => it’s a dog

I dunno. Looks pretty related to the Shaggy DA to me.

We did a DNA test on a rescue we recently got. Came back 12.5% chow chow, 12.5% husky and the rest was such a mess of breeds that they couldn’t say what they were. They labeled him a mega mutt and offered us a refund.

Vet couldn’t get to Olive’s splenectomy last night and said it’s not at risk of rupturing, so she pushed it to tomorrow. She’s 9 years old, and we had to put our last frenchie down with Lymphoma at 10. I’m pretty worried about tomorrow and the possibility of the tumor being malignant.

Bleh. Worst part of having pets.

Re: the best and worst of having pets.

My wife showed me this the other day. Tearjerker alert at full 100, so approach cautiously if you are somewhere you cant be seen crying.

Its stunning to see an absolute master of crowd control do what Stewart does here to this crowd. Obviously the sentiment of the poem is incredible, but for anybody who is even the slightest bit curious of seeing a single person own the souls of 100+ in one moment, this is something to see.

Fostering a beagle for a week before he gets adopted. He’s one year old, has never walked on a leash, isn’t really house trained, and I’m not even sure how much he’s actually been inside a house (he doesn’t understand stairs).

He’s taking his cues from Waylon, who as usual is being so patient and sweet.
