Visited the pupper again last night
Doin a derp
Holy shit
Nailed it. Purebred or mixed with something? We are pretty sure ours was an AussieWiler, but never found out for sure.
Does he reverse sneeze as well? Our old man has been doing it a lot lately
Nice. Awesome coloring.
I’ve always done the same also especially when they get over excited about treats and you have them hid in your hand or they nip your finger getting the treat. Clicker training is awesome if any of you have never heard of it or used it.
I definitely do this with Hunter and Winston. It works great for minor infractions or annoyances. It’s a gentle correction or reminder notice that I’m watching them. If I see Winston sniffing at the trash can, a quick TSST!. Very seldom do I have to escalate.
I don’t like the way he “trains” his dogs. You want your dog to be your bf and to have your back so to speak. Positive reinforcement does this. You don’t need to challenge your dog. Love and a strong leader is the way to go.
Had to look this up. No, I don’t think so.
This is 100% right. Training your dog like Cesar is analogous to raising your kids like a prison guard because prisoners do what prisoners guards tell them to do. Its closer to animal cruelty than “training”.
Ya Cesar is really bad. He basically abuses his animals. Tons of research show any physical negative training is bad.
I don’t watch the guy, and I never hit or hurt an animal.
Correction is escalation of voice. Maybe once a year I have to swipe them with a towel or throwing my hat at them. The cruelest I get is a bear hug.
Resorting to pain or violence is an operator error.
Thoughts of dog: It’s 2020. Why do we need all these remotes?
I mean Cesar’s whole thing is that the dogs are acting the way they are because the owners are abdicating leadership. If a pet owner is a strong leader the dog will naturally follow. And I just don’t see how positive reinforcement alone can teach a dog what not to do. Even the exaggerated howling in pain when a puppy bites is negative reinforcement. How do you get him to stop with just positive reinforcement?
Dogs can usually tell when you aren’t happy with them without a lot of demonstration on your part. You frown. You say their name with a down inflection And lower pitch at the end.
The don’t need a hand raise or screaming.
Having gotten rescues the last few times it’s especially important because their previous environment probably was very negative. Jake loves to be petted but even we have to start with his chin and then move our hands to the top his head.
Staying in control of yourself is the whole point. If you are anxious and out of control they will be too.
There was another guy-Justin??? that advocates you be the leader but more in setting the tone. He didn’t catch on like Cesar.
Since we are talking TV animal trainers. Anybody have thoughts about My Cat From Hell?
This is where people get a little bit confused. How can punishment be positive? Isn’t it always negative?
Positive punishment is the giving of something that is punishing, and negative punishment involves taking something away. Both are used as a way of making a behavior less likely.
Positive punishment is not recommended since using pain and fear to train dogs requires a great deal of ability, excellent timing and a thorough understanding of dog behavior.
Anyone who has those skills will also understand how much more effective training is without using positive punishment.
What about negative punishment? Well, it doesn’t necessarily involve doing anything horrible to your dog, so it can be useful in conjunction with positive reinforcement if used correctly.
For example, think about how you might withdraw your attention if your dog jumps up at you. That would be negative reinforcement.
If your dog then sat to greet you instead, you could use positive reinforcement instead, making it more likely to repeat.
Phoebe is home!
We’re taking the treat training approach recommended in the videos @clovis8 posted upthread. We could not be more excited about this!
What a cutie!
