This is interesting.

Analytics catching up to true punter value?

lol at these clowns not taking punt god gmafb

at least we found out about how dean had a pec tear.

I guess most likely spot now is chicago, they let their punter go in the offseason

also that offense is bad which is mandatory to take a guy like this

According to this random google result

10 yards of average starting field position is worth 1 point at best. The difference between the net average of the best and worst punter last year was 7 yards while 28 punters were within 3 yards of each other.

How often does a punter get injured compared to a HB or WR? How often do they demand a new contract?

That’s what I was thinking. Admittedly, I was feeling a little silly about my 3rd round comment earlier.

When a second quintile punter will do I think teams should take a gamble on another position instead. Just sign one of the undrafted punters if you have to.

For sure.

I haven’t followed the drafts as closely the past 3 years. Punters going in the 4th seems kinda new.

The 49ers drafted Wishnowsky in the 4th round in 2019. He is below average. (There are probably others but he’s the only one I can come up at the top of my head because I am a 49ers fan.)

I think punter metrics are tough to evaluate. Doesn’t take that much field position before their range covers the yards to go. Then you have to control for returner skill and coverage skill on the return yardage. Has anyone done that?

punt god to the bills

that’s just wrong

at least buffalo is probably gonna go for it at midfield so he doesn’t have to pooch much MORE BOMBS PLEASE

punters were always 5th or worse, it’s wishnowsky, this draft, anger, all the way from 2007 where podlesh and Sepulveda went off the board in the 4th.

before that a couple 3rd in colquitt (pretty good) and bj sander (LOL)

none from the 2nd since the bears took sauerbrun who eventually made probowls with carolina, his best attribute was he could blast punt returners so that was something

Tom Tupa was drafted in the third round in 1988 though he played both QB and punter for Ohio State.

Erxleben was drafted 11th overall in 1979 as a kicker/punter dual-threat but mostly punted for the Saints. And of course Ray Guy was drafted by Undead Al in the first round in 1973.

oh I know there’s more than I posted I just wanted to stop

Tupa was drafted as a quarterback/punter though and failed at the first part

Tupa is actually known for two things, the first NFL two point conversion and that game he had to play qb for the jets in punter shoes cause dipshit parcells didn’t have a backup ready and vinny t got hurt and he played pretty well somehow

I mean he wasn’t that bad of a QB. Better than Rick Mirer.

poles is what many on this forum would do trade down, stockpile picks and just draft all the athletes and hope one of them pans out

also the bears now have lamar jackson, joe thomas, and zach thomas on the roster

PFF really hated wandale pick but it was just based on size it looked like.

PFF absolutely loves the Chiefs draft. And like we always say, PFF is the infallible single source of football truth.

If Steelers don’t take Pickett, does he also fall to third round?

I think the Giants envision Wan’Dale similar to Ty Montgomery or Cordarrelle Patterson. Wan’Dale played both RB and WR in college and will likely serve as a sort of all-purpose talent.

It’s a huge risk for a second round pick though. The bust potential is extremely high.
