I’m not saying I can’t see a rationale for it, like face guarding is technically legal in the NFL and you could reasonably claim the contact was all mutual hand-fighting. But that’s more of a reason to not throw the flag to begin with. Once it’s thrown, you really need a good reason to pick it up, and there wasn’t one.

DVOA isn’t a perfect stat, but it’s a nice snapsot. The average Defensive DVOA for the Patriots during the Brady run was 13th in the league - exactly what you would expect for a team that spends more than 50% of cap on the defense.

The offense averaged 5th. With more money being spent on the defense personnel, and 15+ games outdoors every year.

Only twice in the 18 Brady years was the Defense rated higher in DVOA than the offense. Twice!

If you prefer EPA, the Patriots defense was exactly equivalent to Green Bay’s defense during Rodgers run. Slightly better than league average.
