The NFL Thread 2: 1. T Swift

Given what Russ cost, 2 firsts and 32 milly is a bargain. In what world is a franchise QB not worth 2 firsts (of any pick number) when it is pretty rare to find one outside of the top 5, and even with a top 5 pick it may take a couple tries to find a player who is good enough but still worse than Jackson?

Donā€™t fall into the trap of letting Russā€™s deal anchor you to Lamarā€™s worth. He may be worth the 32 mil per year, but the two firsts is a big one, especially when thereā€™s about a 99% chance heā€™s unrestricted next year and you can make your offer without giving up picks. And the question of whether Lamar is a true franchise QB (i.e. top 10 in the NFL) is still up for debate. We live in a world where Kirk Cousins and David Carr are, so maybe.

Iā€™m mostly pushing on the narrative that this is some anti-trust effort amongst NFL teams to say ā€œfuck this guyā€ and not just the natural outcome of a QB who is on the fringe of being a guy you give a max deal to. If anything Russ shitting the bed last season is going to make some teams re-think how they evaluate established QBs.

You donā€™t think they would tag again next year?

They can but they have to give him a 20% raise, which might be reasonable for another year or two. At some point that number gets untenable, and they have to lock him up or let him hit the FA market.

David Carr ITT. Idk if they track it but if they do that guy has to hold the record for most self sacks. He fucking loved running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage instead of throwing it away.

Sure, but thatā€™s only $38 next year and then $46. Even $46 isnā€™t that bad for one year.

I donā€™t think theyā€™re that forward thinking. I think theyā€™re just weak. Theyā€™d kill the golden goose and turn Football into a league of have and have nots if they could, and it seemed like it would make them more money in the short run.

I do think MLB was kind of interesting in that all the executive committee players (the stars, Scott Borasā€™ clients) voted against the final CBA, and the rank and file overwhelmingly voted for it. Could be a schism there.

I think MLB would be healthier w/o the stranglehold Boras has on it. National pundits canā€™t even mention salary cap or floor w/o getting their access cut off. Also the dumbasses think the players are going to stand by them when they want to unionize their shop. Good luck with that.

The NBA is the best because they redistribute money away from the top players in order to create a healthy middle class.

is the narrative ā€œfuck this guyā€?.. i assumed, and my own opinion, isnā€™t that itā€™s fuck THIS guy, but its ā€œfuck THESE guysā€ attacking the idea of guaranteed contracts. i thought the owners already kinda said the quiet part out loud about that.

In what universe is Jackson not a top 10 qb? Itā€™s not debatable or close

For sure better:

Mahomes
Allen
Burrow

Probably roughly same tier:

Herbert
Rodgers
Maybe Dak
Maybe Hurts
Maybe Stafford

Iā€™m not sure itā€™s even debatable after that.

Definitely closer to T5 than not in the T10.

Guess I forgot Watson but he would be in that second group at best especially with all of the off the field stuff.

Considering Lamar wants 50+ million. 36-42 look pretty good.

Forgot Goff

Lamar is good, but doesnā€™t seem like the answer to get you a ring, especially on the AFC

Who does other than Allen, Maholmes, and Burrow. Jackson when healthy and playing well definitely has as much ring equity as anyone other than those three (excluding if you hit on a rookie QB). Should the rest of the AFC just punt with a cheap QB/draft a young guy?

You canā€™t pay a running qb 250 million guaranteed

He gonna die

Heā€™s 1-3 in the playoffs, including his MVP year. And I kinda remember him being mediocre as a primary reason for some of those losses.
