This game reminded me a lot of Brady’s last year in NE, where the team was in clear decline, still coasted to the playoffs thanks to trash division, then got massively exposed in the first round. Obviously time is running out for the guy but I think the “lol so washed” takes are a little hot. From the handful of times I’ve seen TB play this year, I think this is pretty much how they looked against solid defenses all season.
Yeah, watching him last night I think both things can be true - he is starting to decline but he can still throw the damn ball pretty well. I think with the right team he could absolutely contend next year. Brock Purdy’s success is making SF unlikely but that would be a perfect fit. 46 yr old Brady probably gets a ring with that team.
Yeah I think all the talk about “he needs his own timetable to decide” really means he’s gonna talk to Miami and SF and whatever other places might be able to use him and have the other pieces in place, then quietly retire “on his own terms” if nobody bites. He’s definitely not settling for a bad team just to play.
I don’t think he’s washed, either, but I think he’s decidedly average. His arm is still strong enough, but I don’t think his accuracy is where it was, and I think his brain is a tick slower - I’m 42 and my brain is a tick slower. It’s tough - the nation is in desperate need of quarterbacks, and if he’s league average - you’re right - he can still win on a good team.
But, it kinda sucks watching him be league average. I didn’t want him to retire when he left the Pats, and I didn’t want him to retire last year. I kind of hope he does now. I didn’t think he was part of the problem his last year in NE, but I do think he was part of the problem for the Bucs this year. The comebacks this year were fun, and I can’t begrudge a guy not retiring if he’s league average.
Yeah I have no idea where his head’s at really. It’s possible the guy just loves the game enough that he’d even be happy bumming around the league as a Fitzpatrick type for a few years, become the first 50yo to start a game, pass 100k yards, etc. etc.
Almost like when Rickey Henderson was happy to platoon for the Mets, then be like a 5th outfielder on the Red Sox, then kept playing Independent League ball for a couple years because why the hell not. Dude just loved playing.
I like the Rickey comp. I enjoyed his time in Boston.
I think you guys are probably right - if he can find a good team (and the Bucs ain’t it), then he’ll play. Kinda feel like he’s unlikely to find a good one that will want him, though.
SF already has the next Brady for no money not sure why they’d even look at Tom
Or Jaromir Jagr going to the Czech hockey leagues
Would Brady go to Vegas and play with McDaniels?
I think there’s some chance that he’ll play with a bad team, just to keep playing. But my guess is that they’re not good enough for him.
I assume he wants SF or MIA, I doubt they want him. Then is the group of Vegas, Washington, Jets, Titans, Saints and Colts. Honestly I’d put Vegas 6th on that list, but maybe he loves McDaniels, Adams and Hunter Renfroe.
Renfrow actually seems like the type of guy Brady could turn into a star and Adams is a top 3 WR. They’re not that far off, especially if they could trade Carr for a veteran at another position. Plus it’s a warm weather low tax state.
It’s wild to look at McDaniel’s pro football reference page. His years coaching Brady, in total points:
7th (the year with Reche Caldwell #1 Receiver)
1st
1st
3rd
4th
3rd
3rd
2nd
4th
7th (Brady’s last year, with 33 year old Julian Edelman #1 receiver)
Without Brady (as Head Coach or OC):
8th (Cassel year)
20th
19th
32nd
27th
6th (last year in New England)
12th
Also if he really believes whatever it is he’s saying, he should be printing money betting every underdog in those spots, because the oddsmakers very much disagree with his take as evidenced by the odds he could have gotten on the Jags.
My first thought with the $1.4 Million bet was that it was a professional operation that feels like they have edge in super short odds plays.
ThAt’S hOw tHe HoUsE aLwAyS WiNs.
Byron Leftwitch and Joe Lombardi both fired.
Shane Day too
Bowles and Staley get to stink it up another year though
SF with Purdy so far is +.19 points per play
Patrick Mahomes is +.18 (I think that is this seasons numbers)
Seems the 49ers got a real horseshoe up the backside with Purdy. Normally having to play your third string qb in the playoffs would mean it’s over. Instead rookie mr. Irrelevant is playing exceptionally well.
There is a lot of talk that he is buoyed by a good team, and while true the reality is a lot of qbs would not fare as well in the same circumstance.
Like Jimmy G or Lance.
Dallas defense will be a heavy lift, but if 49ers make it past them, I suspect they’ll be small favorites at Philly.
