The NFL Thread 2: 1. T Swift

I don’t get the hate for campbell

they play hard for him they just suck

at least I don’t remember a lions team playing this hard for any other coach they’ve had

I like DC

He’s just not good at his job ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This does back up the eye test

Now do by leverage. Brady didn’t sell his soul to the debbil to get the calls in the first quarter.

Clark is good against the run. Losing him hurts.

Lol.

It’s a fantasy, man. He doesn’t get more calls.

Well then he sold his soul to the devil for the tuck rule and dropped INTs. Seems like he’d have bargained for a little more.

Yup

Awful

Maybe it’s just emotions but KC not converting there feels like an instant loss - given the Raiders running game and kicker. Whereas it’s still not an instant win even if we convert. Although close.

“Well, the hard part is that because we have no real standard for what roughing the passer looks like, we will always get a wide range of what a referee decides is and isn’t a foul,” the committee member told Werder. “The only way to correct that is to have a ‘review process’ for personal fouls. We may even have to do that for OPI (offensive pass interference) and DPI. These are huge fouls that impact and can change the game when the foul is or isn’t called. I don’t know if the powers that be would want that ‘review process’ for personal fouls or not, though.”

Roughing the passer is the only rule with which referees are instructed to err on the side of caution.

The NFL rulebook notes: “When in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactic against the quarterback, the referee should always call roughing the passer.”

Overall I feel like defensive players have overwhelmingly adjusted to the rules. I see QBs getting wrapped up around the waist with perfect form all the time now when they get sacked, with the defender even twisting to make sure they hit the ground first and give the QB a nice soft landing. Like nobody’s stupid enough at this point to intentionally lead with the helmet or throw a guy to the ground or land on top of him, there has to be some leeway for some of the times that the latter two happen just due to momentum or whatever.

I’m still convinced the awful roughing call at the end of TB/ATL is strictly a makeup for the flagrant DPI one play earlier that didn’t get called. Of course if you’re gonna make all three fouls reviewable then I guess the result of that game doesn’t change at all. (Narrator: They made all three fouls reviewable, changed like 2 out of 150 calls, made games last 20 minutes longer, and then scrapped the idea after one season.)

woof

I think part of the problem with roughing the passer is that they tried too hard to define and make the refs follow the letter not the spirit. I really don’t see what was so wrong with a general “don’t use excessive force bringing down the QB.” Every other penalty is pretty subjective and the refs get regular training on when to call PI & holding, which as the old saying goes, you could call on every play if you followed the letter.

“Don’t use excessive force” isn’t the spirit any more. They made that clear when they clearly and explicitly defined falling with your body weight onto the QB as a foul. The spirit is using less force than for normal tackles.

This was after he said the difference between the coammnders and their three division rivals is QB. Which of course is crazy.

If they don’t want qbs hit, then the qb shouldn’t be allowed to try to break a tackle.

Or make it two hand touch or give them flags to wear.

“The victim is a photographer at the Chiefs/Raiders game. At the end of the game, he was pushed to the ground causing injury. He made arrangements for private transport to the hospital for treatment at which time he called police. The injuries are preliminarily thought to be non-life threatening. The incident will be investigated by our Assault Unit detectives, upon completion they will coordinate with the applicable city or state prosecutor to determine any applicable charges.”

I’d be fine with a rule against falling with your body weight being an infraction on any tackles. Or at least going out of your way to do it. It’s sort of obvious when someone tries to deliver a death blow in cases where it’s excessive. I’m not sure I like any rule where QB’s who still have the ball, and can still break the tackle and become a runner, to have protections that other positions don’t. I get why the NFL does it ($$) and I doubt they change it, but I’m not sure scaling back a few of these roughing the passer penalties on what any normal human judges as clean sacks is going to lead to a lot of injuries, and it’s currently harming their brand at the moment.
