four of Las Vegas’ top five picks in the 2020 draft were gone in less than a season and a half, with Ruggs and Arnette joined by Lynn Bowden Jr. (traded to Miami before the season started) and Tanner Muse, who spent his rookie season on IR and was cut before the 2021 season began. In fact, heading into that draft, Mayock said having three picks in the third round was “like stealing,” and if the Raiders did their job right, they’d have “three more starters.”
The one still there you ask? Bryan Edwards who has 4 career touchdowns despite mostly starting.
oh there’s more
A year earlier, the Raiders had three first-round picks and used them on defensive end Clelin Ferrell at No. 4 overall, running back Josh Jacobs at No. 24 and strong safety Johnathan Abram at No. 27. Ferrell is more of an impact player on special teams than a consistent contributor. Jacobs has a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons and a Pro Bowl nod on his résumé, but his production slipped drastically this season. Although Abram can be effective against the run, he is a detriment against the pass.
This past spring, the Raiders used the No. 17 pick on Alabama offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, whom many had assigned a second-round grade. He struggled enough at right tackle that he was moved to right guard in Week 5 and is the second-most penalized offensive lineman in the NFL.
oh man how terrible Ferrell pick was even at the time everyone went wut
also beginning of his tenure was him trading two picks for antonio brown who never played for them.
According to the incident report obtained by the Sun Sentinel, police in Deerfield Beach, Florida, reported getting a call of a naked man walking near a school, later to be determined as a children’s learning center that was in session. When confronted, McDowell charged at police “full speed with closed fist,” according to the report, leaving a deputy injured. McDowell then fled, but eventually was shocked with a Taser and handcuffed.
In 2019, McDowell was charged in Michigan with driving while impaired, obstructing justice and assaulting a police officer. Video showed McDowell fighting with police even after they stunned him with a Taser following a DUI stop. Two months later, he was found in possession of a stolen truck, leading to another charge of receiving and concealing stolen property. He was sentenced to 11 months in jail and three years’ probation after pleading guilty to the series of crimes.
The Browns gave McDowell a second chance at football last year, with Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry noting that McDowell had been “accountable for his actions” and was “in a good place, personally and medically.”
ya know browns you can take a chance on a talented guy with clear psych issues who is actually good at the sport and ignore guys like this
Mcdowell was a 35th overall pick who had never seen the field because he got seriously injured when he crashed his ATV while not wearing a helmet (after signing a contract which prohibited him from driving ATVs).
He had the potential to be actually good if he could manage to stop being a dumbass.
Yeah idk exactly where Mac should rank in a redraft, but pretty confident he’s going to be good first round value. Also think there’s a pretty good chance he’s not gonna be much of an asset on his second contract, there are real
physical limitations. Not sure I’d adjust priors from the draft much beyond downgrading Wilson and upgrading Mills given the tire fires Lawrence and Fields played in and the expected Lance redshirt season.
Supposedly he doesn’t interview well, which could of course be pure racism. Also everyone know Andy calls all the plays, no matter what they say in public. The NFL Turning Point after the 49ers SB seemed to confirm that he’s just a conduit between Reid and Mahomes.
I will say that I tend to skip over his parts in the pressers because it seems like nothing but cliches and over-emphasizing every damn point like we were all kids on his Pop Warner team. His pressers would drive me nuts if he was our head coach. He’d be a great motivational speaker to pump up a bunch of regional sales managers.
In any case last year or the year before seemed to be the peak of his “heat”. It doesn’t look likely that he’ll get picked up now, which kind of borks the Reid pipeline that has Kafka lined up to be the next OC.
Oh yeah - also Bienemy has been in the Super Bowl the last two years and championship game the year before that.
Supposedly that’s been part of the reason. Teams need to get started NOW. Which has to be mostly BS. If you found your guy, you’ll wait two weeks. But the problem is if it doesn’t work out with your guy after those two weeks, you’ve missed out on everyone else.
It seems ridiculous the league doesn’t level the playing field and make every team wait until after the super bowl.
I mean look at the Cowboys. You could argue Quinn and Moore had a huge incentive to exit the playoffs as soon as possible.
I think the league is somewhat starting to sour on the idea of hiring lackeys of strong head coaches. I’m not saying that’s what Bieniemy is, but that’s going to be the perception. The Andy Reid coaching tree is notoriously shitty. He got a ton of interviews last year becuase first round bye coordinators can get interviewed. I remember hearing a lot about why he was a bad fit here in Detroit, after we had just gotten off of 3 terrible years from a bad Belichick disciple.
Bieniemy also had a ton of legal problems in college. It was 30+ years ago, it shouldn’t disqualify him, but I could understand that stuff being a factor / tie breaker for a job where he’d be one of the key faces for a billion dollar franchise. If you’ve got two candidates you like, and one of them was accused of grabbing a woman’s neck and 10 years later got a DUI, I think it’s understandable to pick the other dude.
I don’t know if any other recently hired Head Coaches have legal problems in their background, probably at least a few. This may be a deal where the black guy is held to a higher standard. I know Patricia had an assault come to light after he was hired, but allegedly the Lions didn’t know about it at the time.
I believe the Lions when they say they didn’t know about it. The details of the case were pretty brutal. Basically he was on spring break and him and a friend were accused of breaking into a girls hotel room and raping her. The DA thought the evidence was damning enough to make him stand trial, but the accuser didn’t show so he got off free and clear. It was a bad look for the team and the front office quickly came to his defense although I really believe if this had been public knowledge it may have been a disqualifier. Who knows though.
