I use snap traps. I’ve seen kites swoop and snatch from my backyard so I figure between me and them the mice should be sorted. It’s funny but I’ll happily remove spiders from inside the house and set them free outside but I have been known to scream when a mouse is sighted. I was sitting on the toilet and a mouse ran in and I screamed so loud my bf came running out. He was somewhat unamused about the reason for my scream and I replied “But it was coming right for me!”.
Unfortunately I have experience with mice and rats. I’ve caught mice in “humane” traps and they couldn’t handle being cooped up and stressed themselves to death in less than like 12 hours. This was an enclosed trap and maybe they do better in an open cage like that.
IME it’s not one mouse, but hopefully you got the first one. We would have sworn it was just one mouse at first, but I think we got like 15 of them before the infestation was over.
It’s never just one mouse.
Depends.
We live in an area with a lot of deer mice, and we have bird feeders in the back yard which the mice love - so every night at dusk we get mice capades, with them running from the hillside behind the house across the patio to the feeders - drives the cats nuts. We haven’t had a mouse in the house for about years or so. Not that they’d last, with 3 cats.

I would love to have a cat, but everyone in my family thinks it’s too risky with the dog. I’m sure the dog will be nice to a cat if I tell her to. The dog never took notice of mice. They are too fast. She did catch some rats though, mostly with me giving an assist. She was never happier than when we had a rat hunt on.
They’re Zodiac mice.
Our cat was worthless (this was at my mom’s).
At one point, I saw a mouse sticking it’s head out a hole, I picked up our cat and faced it. It did nothing. After a few attempts I got so rustled I tossed the cat at it, like she was napalm or something.
Is that a rock in the middle of the room? Wtf?
Had to trap raccoons out of the garbage way back when. Boy did they not like that. Shit everywhere.
Now have a dog that takes care of all outside vermin. Plus a few chickens.
Rhodesian Ridgeback? Had a dog just like that when I was a kid. They used them in packs to hunt lions in Africa. They got the instinct for it.
Red Coonhound. Will take on damn near anything. Horses love having him around, they feel super safe.
Extremely friendly and a very sensitive to humans. Gets very sad when his master (my brother) goes out of town.
