I was curious, so I looked into who the two cosmonauts are: they are Valery Bykovsky and Valentina Tereshkova, the 11th and 12th people to ever travel to space (you will note there are 12 stars on the mural). Valentina was the first woman in space and for those of you who play super-nerdy video games, she is the inspiration for Valentina Kerman in KSP.

Here in Ohio, we a statue of America’s first astronaut, John Glenn. It’s not so impressive:

But of course, everyone knows that in the Midwest our traditional way of honoring our heroes is with butter sculptures. Here is a butter sculpture of Ohio’s own Neil Armstrong and the crew of Apollo 11 at the state fair:

And there’s a cow there too, looking at them. On the moon. I don’t know why.

The cow really cracked me up

What if you wanted to make a butter sculpture of stick of butter, I wonder

Butter sculpture is an amazing art form.

^^ butter sculpture of the US presidents from Ohio.

Ah, the Ohio State Fair…bringing me back to my youth.

the fairs in CA just aren’t the same. They try, they really do, but they can’t compete. Speaking of, I lived in LA when this ad aired and it’s still, IMHO, one of the greatest bits of advertising ever produced.
