took this pic at a market in Tokyo a few weeks ago bc I was so astounded by the prices. Ikioi will know more, but iirc those grapes are supposed to be some special Japanese varietal that are much larger than standard grapes. we get knockoffs in Korean supermarkets here in NYC. they’re very sweet and not worth the markup.
I’m sure they’re great, but I don’t know about $40 great.
Well, I’m sure the savings on all of those elite sushi lunches will cover this easily.
lol $40 grapes, you peasants. I only eat Certified Premium Ruby Roman grapes.
For each harvest, “Superior Grapes” make up 90% while “Special Superior Grapes” make up 10%. Superior bunches are between $90 and $140 and for Special superior bunches, the price can vary from $180 to $450.
However, there is a unique category that is even higher than the two–“Premium”. In order to qualify as a “Premium” Ruby Roman grape, every grain has to be at least 30 grams and a single certified bunch can be sold for $1000.
What the fuck happens if they don’t sell their $1000 bunch of grapes on day 1? Does it just slowly go rotten? Do they reduce the price every day? Surely they don’t freeze them to preserve them.
You think they can keep perfect grapes like that in stock? Please. You’re lucky to get a bunch for $1000.
According to a 2023 story by Hikkoku Shinbun (a newspaper written where Ruby Romans are grown), “one bunch [of grapes] weighing about 1 kg sold for a record high of 1.6 million yen [around $10,000 USD].”
Ordinary grapes are reasonably priced. These are super-luxury grapes, and priced accordingly.
Well, at least they’re cheaper than the $300 melons. Fortunately we didn’t buy these ourselves, but rather, received them from our in-laws, who themselves received them as gifts.
And that is the main purpose of these extravagant fruits. Japan has an elaborate and complicated gift-giving culture, and expensive fresh fruits are a common gift item.
Unless you’re my wife’s (now deceased) wealthy great aunt, who used to just go to the grocery and casually buy a few bunches of these to snack on.
As for the question of whether they’re worth the price, probably not. But they are quite delicious, certainly more so than the standard grape, and I’m happy for the rare opportunity to enjoy them.
Is there $10,000 durian?
Some people have more Yen than acumen.
A video game developer placed 10oz of gold in a forest, there’s a circle that shrinks every day giving it’s location, a cash/btc prize as well.
I told my wife that if the circle is still near New Hampshire’s border, we’re going looking this weekend.
Hopefully no one gets lost/stabbed/shot.
This is mind blowing.

Closer? Did you say “closer”? Nothing is closer until we decide it is! Is it closer to when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
I didn’t want to muck up the election thread for this, but I saw this clip recently and man Tom Jones can still bring it.
