“Donald Trump declares victory now that a majority of Senators have voted to convict him, including 7 Republicans, while several others said he was guilty but voted not guilty based on a bullshit technicality.”
This should have been such an easy win for Dems. They subpoena Trump as a witness (plus whoever else they want). Until Trump appears, they tell his lawyers they can’t call any witnesses. His lawyers can whine all they want, but Dems just repeat that until their client is willing to comply with their subpoena, it’s unfair for to allow them to issue their own subpoenas.
Riverman has already handled this. Just change the rules. They’ve got enough votes for that whenever needed. As long as it’s something that is not actually in the constitution (e.g. barrier to secret ballot), then they just change the rules whenever they need to. It’s what the GOP would do.
I am probably ponied here but if the Senate can’t get 60 votes for this, that is every reason you need to get rid of the filibuster.
Dems have a huge advantage here because they will use a simple majority to pass real progressive populist legislation. When the GOP gets back in power they will just use it to pay off their donors and hopefully get voted out.
Nothing more than a play being acted out by two sides that look as though they’re fighting each other when they’re really working together to increase governmental power at the expense of the people.
“Whatever reaction he says he meant to produce by the afternoon, we know he was watching the same live television as the rest of us,” Mr. McConnell said. “A mob was assaulting a Capitol in his name. These criminals were carrying his banners, hanging his flags and screaming their loyalty to him.”
He added: “He did not do his job. He did not take steps so federal law could be faithfully executed and order restored. No, instead, according to public reports, he watched television happily — happily — as the chaos unfolded.”
Mr. McConnell also rejected one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers’ most explicit defenses: that his words had been no different from those of any other politician advocating a cause.
“That is different from what we saw,” he said.
Notably, he argued that it was up to the criminal justice system to hold former presidents to account for their conduct in office. Mr. Trump, he said, “didn’t get away with anything yet.”
