My tendency is to view this subject within the context of (mostly postmodern) criticism of the idea of the great western canon.

We’re comparing art within the western cannon, so that’s somewhat irrelevant.
I don’t see the purpose of comparing say The Great Gatsby or Tender Is The Night with, say, Things Fall Apart which I think is also a brilliant novel; or modern art with African art; and think that’s a fool’s errand.
I almost made it my favourite book in that thread.

I’ve got no issue with ordering the cheapest wine by the glass. Wine is insanely overpriced, especially at places where Ross eats.
