The Former Presidency of Donald J. Trump, Volume XI: The Crypt Keeper Years

Since when does the world actually work this way? Unless people are watching this live, Trump supporters are going to see highlights of Trump’s team confirming what they believe.

I wonder whether the impeachment managers will engage Trump’s argument and present evidence the election was not in fact rigged.

Opinions are good and it’s great to hear different ones, but when yours differs so greatly from the overwhelming weight of critical opinion it’s probably time to reconsider if it’s just a personal taste thing.

planet money podcast released an audio book reading of the great gatsby since its copyright just expired. i actually enjoyed listening to the first half so far.

I don’t think they’ll try to claim the election was rigged. They have zero evidence to back that up, and even if they did, that doesn’t justify what happened. Trump will likely be throwing a tantrum but he’ll be out of sight, so its not going to phase his lawyers. I think they’ll focus on whether a President can be impeached after leaving office. In a normal trial, that would just be a motion that the judge would consider. But in a Senate trial, I think it can be the basis of his defense.

right, all they need to do is give a semi-plausible reason for normie GOP senators to acquit, and this is more than sufficient.

Gatsby was a much different book to me at 35 then it was at 18. I love it, but I’m a total sucker for hating on stupid, banal rich people.

This is a pretty blazing hot take. I don’t think anything like this will happen next week, we’ll see exactly what they’ve been projecting (“its unconstitutional to impeach a former president” “bloodthirsty dems are mob witch hunting someone out of office” “he never said to actually attack the capitol so he’s innocent”) and they’ll vote 52-48 to convict plus or minus a vote.

I don’t think we’ll see much if all of election rigged talk. We’ll see 2 low energy lawyers no one other than law bro marks have heard of for 2 days and its over. Trump himself will be no where near it.

This will be Kavanaugh 2.0.

The Democrats will put on an overwhelmingly strong case, the media will go nuts about how convincing it was, you’ll see a bunch of “man Republicans might have to convict him now, plus they can get rid of him in 2024” stories, Mitch will leak how disgusted he is, then his lawyers will rant and rave about procedure and witch hunt and whatever and at least 45 GOP Senators, probably more, will vote to acquit.

Kavanaugh rallied the whole party against dems though. IIRC Trumps approval went up a couple points during that. And independents opinions didn’t change much either.

Only really democrats opinion on him tanked.

← ^^ I enjoyed The Great Gatsby also, obviously

English Lit major here. Can’t stand Tale of Two Cities. Love Moby Dick. I was also forced to read Melville’s 18,000 line epic poem Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land. I do not recommend it!

In terms of classic American literature I’m a big Hemingway fan FWIW.

In terms of classic American literature, I’m a big fan of reading things shorter than novels.

The Sun Also Rises is up there at a pretty close second for me.

Opinions are more like assholes. Everyone has one.

Surely you must have a taste in something that goes against the common grain or can you just send me to the correct mass of critics to determine my opinions from here out?

And talk about movies that suck. How about that 70s version?

Yeah and we agree - it’s about individual taste vs the weighted mass of sustained critical opinion - but saying “I don’t like this” is a separate thing from saying “I think this is bad”.

I know one is often said in place of the other - if that’s what you meant I take it back - but it’s an important distinction.

I like all sorts of shit that I can’t really justify intellectually lol.

I think it’s bad. I don’t think I’m the only one that had the experience in high school.

I completely understand most like it. When I said bad it’s not just that I don’t like it, it’s that I didn’t think it was that well done. Maybe standards changed. Maybe having the obvious symbolism water boarded into me. Ooo the glasses on the billboard might be god watching. The green light on the dock.

Really you are going with criticizing how someone is expressing their opinion?

After sending me the critics list can I also get a copy of the book of criticism etiquette so I don’t make another faux pas in a frickin internet post that spent exactly 15 seconds to word?

It’s interesting.

Everyone obviously has the right to their opinions, and they also have the right to say unequivocally “This piece of art is bad”. After all, that’s what critics do.

What I said was if that’s someone’s position on art that has withstood the test of time and is still extremely highly critically evaluated by people far more expert in the field, then maybe they should take another look… and think and read about the opinions of those people, because it’s quite possible they’ve missed some thing(s).

If after that they’re still convinced “This art is bad”, then fine (though they can still expect some pushback) - but at least do that.

Otherwise it’s more of the “My 3 year old’s crayon drawings are better than any Kandinsky”.
