Which team will have a car that suits him and a seat?
Well, I think Alpine would suit him better than Mclaren based on his previous results there, hence the discussion about him going there.
I donât know enough to be able to say what other teams have cars that would suit him - the bigger issue I think is that I would be surprised if he was willing to race for a team that isnât in about the top 6. That really only leaves Alpine as the obvious option, and I think he might still carry enough clout to be seen as an equal or higher priority driver than Ocon.
The car and team that suited Ric best was RedBull but they knew Ver was better and were pretty vocal about that which Ric didnât like. He could be like Rosberg, a 1 time WDC when Ver has a worse season than him in a WDC capable car but instead he gets crushed by Lando and loses his seat to Piastri.
Ricciardo gone as per his own social media
Piastri to McLaren and DC to Alpine probably?
Piastri definitely wants to go to McLaren but the contract saga hasnât been resolved yet. Ricciardo has Haas, Alpine, Williams and Indycar as possibilities. Alpine is the best option but not sure if they want to risk him leaving again after 1 year or not performing while they can just get a rookie to drive for a lot less money.
Piastri confirmed to drive for McLaren in 2023. If he lives up to the hype, him and Norris would make for a really exciting young driver lineup. Hopefully McLaren can deliver a car to compete with the top teams.
WDC done and WCC wonât take much longer. Really hope Mercedes gets their shit together next season as I donât want easy Max wins for several more years.
Max Verstappen is such a â â â â
Yeah, very bad form not to let Perez by on the last lap.
But we were told that he has really matured over the past year!?!
Apparently he was pissed about something that happened at Monaco? Does anybody know what thatâs about?
I donât know shit about F1 but they donât just fire him for that? Pretty rare in sports to see a player just tell their coach lol no fuck off and thatâs ok. I guess heâs good enough to be untouchable?
Rumor is Perez intentionally caused a red flag in Monaco qualifying denying Verstappen pole and a likely race win. Perez ended up winning that race. No idea if that is true although the people saying it have some good arguments based on telemetry data. There is definitely something going on in the team for a while now. Still no need to publicly piss of your team mate with nothing to lose.
His crash with Hamilton was also very questionable especially based on comments Verstappen made after the race. Those two are never going to be able to race wheel to wheel again.
Edit:
Not giving up position when asked is pretty common in F1. There was even a period where team orders like that were not allowed. This time was so unnecessary though.
Yeah theyâre not going to fire him. Heâs still likely the fastest current driver and years of probable future championships are more valuable than a small advantage in the 2nd place driverâs championship. Itâs a minor offense in a vacuum, itâs just the pettiness and selfishness given all the context that makes it a shockingly unsportsmanlike move.
I donât know if Iâd say itâs common. Although thatâs due largely to the fact that teams and drivers have an understanding of their shared priorities. Whether thatâs a #2 driver who will always give way to the #1 or just a standing order to not crash into your teammate or anywhere in between depending on the race. Teams arenât often giving orders that are out of those understood bounds. And drivers will certainly argue an order thatâs to their detriment. But I canât recall very many instances of a driver ignoring orders unless itâs one where the team has made a pretty gross miscalculation of what theyâll benefit or how much it will cost their driver.
Which makes this situation pretty wild. It would have cost Verstappen effectively nothing to switch places and those points could end up being critical for Checo and RBR. I donât think Iâve ever seen a move that selfish. Itâs beyond selfish, itâs a giant fuck you to your teammate. After he put in arguably the most impactful #2 driver performance of all time last year to enable Maxâs first title.
Purposely giving up position seems unsporting to me
for the owners, the sport is arguably more about the constructors championship, which is not just a long season, but the swings are really wild as well, with crashes and other dnfs.
drivers are more individualistic obviously, but in order to drive they really need to listen to the team.
But the constructors championship is decided too.
I wonât pretend to be all about the ol boys club that is f1 but purposely giving up positions for individual racers seems not sporting to me
So dumb from Max. Just give Checo this small thing, which doesnât even affect Max in the grand scheme, and keep him happy so that he keeps going all out to defend for you, give you tows in qualis, give you parts when yours are worn, not fight you for positions, etc. All of which were crucial parts of Max shipping the title last year.
Racers often give up position to faster drivers from other teams without orders because taking suboptimal defensive lines slows them down and increases tire wear and itâs unlikely theyâll be able to hold off a faster car all race. Or theyâll let a similarly fast car through, either their own teammate or occasionally from a different team if theyâre on different pit stop strategies and expect to be far away from each other one way or another by the end of the race. Where do you draw the line?
In yesterdayâs case, Max was behind Checo towards the end of the race but driving faster. Only Max had the pace to maybe advance higher than 6th (although as it turned out, neither did). Do you let your teammate through to try to advance higher or drive defensively to stay ahead of him? Knowing the likely result is he gets through anyway but youâve slowed him down long enough to put any higher places out of reach. If youâre Max do you later give back the place when you realize 6th is the best case for either of you and your teammate let you through without a fight earlier? Not even touching the fact yet that 6th vs 7th is meaningless for Max but hugely important for Checo.
The point is itâs too simple to say that a racer should always defend. Itâs not always in their best interest and itâs even less often in the teamâs best interest. And in F1 you have competing interests with both drivers and teams trying to maximize occasionally conflicting goals. Team orders are part of a comprehensive strategy that everyone now understands is part of F1. Every team draws their line at different points but I doubt there are any teams or drivers who would be happy with Maxâs reaction.
I kinda agree in principle, but in this case it wasnât really âgive up the place for Perez,â it was âPerez gave you the place to try to make the podium, you couldnât, so give it back.â
Re: Monaco, apparently the controversy is because Perez was 3rd in Q3 behind both Ferrariâs, with Max in 4th. Perez crashed, preventing Max from another shot at improving his position. Seems strange since passing is nearly impossible at Monaco, so Checo supposedly wrecked to lock both RBs behind both Ferraris?
