I know dick about any of this, but shouldnā€™t it be possible to hire some top-flight accounting firm to verify that UST has the funds to back up their stablecoin? It seems like thereā€™s an extraordinary amount of money hinging on something that could be verified.

I had an exchange with a crypto bro software engineer at the start of the year where I said it was insane to buy a stable coin at an interest rate similar to an i-bond and he was like ā€œI trust code more than the governmentā€.

There is an important distinction between financial assets which have an expected real return (stocks, bonds, farmland, rental property, etc) and financial assets that do not have an expected real return (commodities, precious metals, crypto, fiat currency, etc).

The GUSD Earn works because Genesis issues out loans at rates higher than that. But as demand for those loans decreases the rate is lowered. For example, recently dropped from 8 to 6.9. Much different from UST. That 20% was mostly coming from thin air afaik
