If only there were some form of insurance, maybe even like a pool of money administered by the government, to make people whole in such situations. Oh right crypto is so awesome precisely because it doesn’t have anything like that.

There’s a persistent myth among crypto dabblers that because all the transactions are on the public blockchain its not possible to get defrauded. One of the first things you’ll learn about Bitcoin is this self regulating aspect which I think makes some casual participants overconfident in the security.

Have we had a “hooker stole my (cold storage) wallet” story yet

I love the ‘bitcoins are there’ comment. Which obviously means nothing if you don’t show you have the private key and even then it might mean very little if someone else also has the private key. It is like Craig Wright claim to being Satoshi. We all know the coins are there, doesn’t mean he is the one with access.

Their business model is truly incredible too. They charge a 2% management fee ($900 million to date) to…buy and hold bitcoins? Seems like an unbelievably sweet arrangement to mess up by stealing but it’s crypto so who knows!

Welp guess my schedule is booked next Wednesday.

I assume this guy hasn’t found a new lawyer yet.

People going to jail for lying about the crypto they hold is also not as clear cut as some people think it is. Karpeles ‘lost’ bitcoin worth hundreds of millions USD when MtGox went under and spent zero time in jail. The most trouble he got was for not having all the fiat he was supposed to have either. He walked on all the fraud and embezzlement charges.
