The beer, wine, and spirits thread

Thompson’s Point, which is where Bissell and Bigfoot place are, was a great area to hang before rona. There’s also a distillery there, as well as a wine tasting room. Plus, you’ve got the outdoor concert space - was always FULL of people. When I stopped in to pick up beer it was depressing to see what a ghost town it’s become.

Fun note on Allagash, you can buy the bourbon barrels that they use to age Curieux after they’ve used them. So the barrels go from aging bourbon in Kentucky to aging Curieux in Portland, then you can pick one up for like $60. Gave one to a friend as a wedding gift, and he split it in half and made a coffee table out of it. We had one for a few years and had it in the corner of our deck with a bunch of plants on it.

My sister loves Allagash that would make a great gift for her. Do you know if they’ll ship the barrel or do you have to pick it up at the brewery?

I’m not sure. When I bought mine, I went to one of their distribution centers and they rolled the barrels out to me (this was not at the brewery). You could always call and ask.

Swish is one of my all time greats.

Local San Diego brewery. Absolutely delicious hazy IPA. First time trying anything from them.

I am wildly jealous of anyone who lives in San Diego and gets to drink their beers all the time. An embarrassment of riches.

Modern Times, Alesmith, Mikkeller, Abnormal, Society, Stone, and (sort of) Alpine all in the same place is just nonsense. I hadn’t heard of Harland last time we went through, but that just makes it worse.

Yeah, San diego is insane for beer selection. We have dozens of breweries within easy driving distance. We’ll choose 3 or 4 that we haven’t tried before, and spend an afternoon driving the PCH or other scenic back streets rather than freeways to get to them and pick up a few 6 packs, just as an excuse to get out of the house.

If you like hazy and/or IPA, then I recommend Pure Project as a local San Diego brewery that makes a great product, but isn’t well known outside the area.

Do you have any beer there that looks like traditional ale ie clear, not gut rot?

Asking for a friend with a delicate stomach.

Because traditional british cuisine is the way to go?

It would be a traditional mistake to confuse traditional beer with traditional cuisine.

cf superb Czech beer and dire food

Sure do. This is the beer that initially put Stone Brewery on the map. Prior to when I moved to SD in 2000, the only beer I had drank was domestic piss water, imported piss water, Lienenkugels, Newcastle, Guinness, and Bass. At the time in the midwest that was the range of beer widely available. Now the midwest is loaded with great breweries.

Apparently it’s available here and I’ll look out for it.

I won’t be drinking it chilled as in that pic, though.

Arrogant bastard is 7.2% which i think is much stronger than traditional ales but i could be wrong. Just fyi.

What non-chilled ales do you recommend?

I actually forgot about Pure Project, Ballast Point, and Pizza Port. Motherofgod.jpg.

Also like all Stone offerings I’ve ever tasted, it’s an unbalanced hop bomb. 100 IBU! Not really something someone with a delicate stomach would be looking for.

Trad English ale.

Some of my favourites are

and espcially these 3:

They’re brewed to have a much deeper flavour non-chilled.

Those are all pretty malty and don’t really have an overwhelming or even strong hop presence, right?

Yeah. I like high IBU’s but that’s not a good example for traditional ale
