The beer, wine, and spirits thread

I just mean it’s my favorite mass produced seasonal beer.

This weekend, I’m going to try to blast through some of the stuff I’ve accumulated over the years. First up, this banger from almost 10 years ago:

This is the kind of experience that makes me think, “no, spidercrab, you’re actually not hoarding too much beer. You should totally buy more so that you can just open up shit like this on a random night.”

Took me too long to realize it’s a delicious fresh hop IPA, and not a disgusting Christmas spice beer.

I forgot to post my rhubbarb Tilquin experience. I frankly could not tell there was much of a rhubbarb note in the beer, maybe it was a little vegetal tasting, but not much difference otherwise. Still pretty good.

I’m just glad my local bottle shop carries such a huge variety of Tilquin and 3 Fonteinen for extremely reasonable prices nowadays. I no longer have to go to the trouble of figuring out how to ship them from Belgium (which I did once thanks to you!).

This cocktail really is so solid. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend ordering one at a good bar or making it at home.

The green chartreuse bottle cost $100. It’s always been a special liquor, but I don’t remember it costing so much. It’s supposedly made using 130 alpine herbs and the recipe is only known by 3 monks at any given time.

This is one of those cocktails where if you order it at a restaurant or bar, it can be super hit or miss. It’s best to make at home, as it’s so easy to execute, but you gotta commit to buying the chartreuse. Worth it, imo.

The Final Ward is a fun riff by Phil Ward of Death & Co in NYC. Equal parts bourbon, yellow chartreuse, maraschino liquor (luxardo), and lemon juice. Another winner.

Excellent choice!

I heard from the guys at the liquor store that chartreuse has been hard to get lately, so maybe that has driven the price up (thanks, Biden!). I remember paying like $65 a year or two ago for the bottle I have at home, which thankfully goes down slowly.

Enjoy!

just to echo spinetta, green and yellow chartreuse have been two of the worst casualties from the supply chain thing. In California I haven’t seen either available to buy for about a year? That said I just snagged some online through a place I’d never heard of (astor wines in nyc); each bottle was ~$65

THE LAST WORD

0.75 oz gin
0.75 oz green chartreuse
0.75 oz maraschino liqueur
0.75 oz lime juice

—shake and double strain into a chilled coupe glass
—brandied cherry garnish (luxardo cherries the way to go here)
—something to try: make one with a great modern gin like Tanqueray No. 10, then make another with an Old Tom gin like Ransom (the latter is more what this drink would have tasted like pre-prohibition; both ways are awesome)

This is a foundational drink (cocktails with four equal parts where two are a base spirit and a citrus) and there are a bunch of famous variations (e.g. Paper Plane, Naked and Famous, Corpse Reviver #2). Really balanced really tasty

You all aging good beer are way better at this than me. The only beer that gets aged at my house is the shit I don’t want to drink anymore and ends up in the back of the fridge forever as they slowly move out of view and get forgotten.

If you like the style, it’s a no brainer. If you don’t know the style, you should definitely give it a shot, although not everyone likes it.

Found at my local store.

Anyone tried this brewery before? I’m new to the west coast and have never heard of them.

Clocking in at 14%, I’ll be speaking in leolols soon.

Fremont is elite at barrel aged imperial stouts.

Fremont was a few blocks down the street from my old job and I used to stop there all the time. In addition to barrel aged stouts as noted by Wookie, they make a ton of good IPAs (as you’ll find to be the case with most West Coast breweries). Now I just pick up their special beers like the one you posted and whip 'em out for special occasions. The prices on their bottles keep going up but the quality always seems to be there.

It’s my buddies favorite brewery in Seattle. He has shipped me a few different BBAs that were all elite.

Edit: I’m late.

Could you share the bar name? My buddy just moved to Tel Aviv. I’m trying to get him to not waste the opportunity and explore the city more. He would enjoy the beer.

I have never had Tilquin on draft. I believe it’s different from the bottled version (lower ABV?), but am not positive. Obviously I’m in favor of everyone drinking Tilquin. I usually like the base gueuze better than the fruited variants, but I’ve definitely enjoyed the Pinot Gris and Riesling versions.

Coincidentally, I had a bottle of Tilquin yesterday while I was watching lolOSU get slapped. It’s their Tilquin squared:

Pretty great, although it’s getting a little weak on carbonation, so I should probably try to get through them sooner rather than later.

I agree with everyone else that Fremont is elite. One of the best beers I’ve ever had is their Coffee Cinnamon Bourbon Barrel Aged Abominable. It’s just so pricey that I can’t bring myself to buy it again.

I also had this beer from 2018 yesterday. Also very good, especially in a 12 oz format:

Some year I’m going to be able to walk past the Duvel gift pack without buying it, but this year apparently is not that year.
