The 2024 Hurricane Season - Helene’s History; Milton’s Menacing

Right, im not talking specifically about people being endangered (they arent in this case) more that we have a city built almost completely on tourism that is going to likely end up a ghost town without a passable road, one that is being increasingly dangerous to pass due to the effects of climate change.

I understand that while the causes of both are the same, the effects are different, but there are effects occuring and a lot of it has to do with our shortsightedness and hubris.

Which city are you talking about?

San Simeon

Ah

Beaches took millions of years to form right? In 100 years, are there just not going to be any sandy beaches once water levels rise? Just trying to visualize this.

We will lose a lot of them. But some will shift or move inland. The sand is still there.

See what just happened with the storm. Sand getting washed up on all the houses inland. Sand can move

This, as the waters rise, the settled sand will be displaced further up the shore.

I was told how much new beachfront property there was going to be when the oceans rise! Was he wrong??

Short video on a few possibilities.

Beach renourishment and replenishment is big business, apparently. ($16M in 2012) They move the sand from a designated “borrow area” nearby to the more desired area. Here is a FAQ on a more recent renourishment for just this one beach. You could probably search just about every ‘<coastal town> + renourishment’ and see some projects pop up.

my mother lives like a state park away from the coastline in florida. i jokingly say that i anticipate inheriting beachfront property down the line after florida defunds everything and they just dont bother to rebuild anything/ steal all the sand from the parks for the rich beach areas like freddbird said…

They get most of the sand from off shore. Sometimes there are fights over sources between local municipalities.

Fucking ghouls

Looks like another hurricane has its sights set on Florida. It’s a depression now, but it’ll get way stronger as it goes from west to east in the Gulf. I was able to dodge Helena as I’m located about halfway up Florida’s East Coast. Doesn’t look like I will be as lucky this time. You would think the morons who run this state would be the ones screaming the loudest about the realities of climate change. You’d think.

Wasn’t it NC that passed a law that specifically prohibited using climate change as a rationale in policy making?

That goes back more than 10 years. no idea if anything has changed since

I don’t know, but this shit is so aggravating. It’s like living in a shooting gallery and we are the ducks. It’s just a matter of time before our houses are hit again. So tired of it. This time, I think I’ll put the shutters up tomorrow and Monday (won’t be easy because I sprained my ankle last week), and then just take off to some casino somewhere, maybe Biloxi unless they’re in the path as well. It’s so frustrating.
