They seem to know party affiliation of the outstanding vote, whereas I am making very conservative estimates on the margins.

There are a slate of electors that are bound to vote for a particular candidate, and these people are themselves elected within state parties. They are invariably hardcore party insiders (county party chairs, local elected officials, etc).

Iā€™m assuming most (if not all) electors are long-time party activists. It would be quite the long-con if the Dems somehow seated a secret deplorable.

Thing is that this isnā€™t a single country counting. Think of this more as 51 elections going on at the same time combined together each of which with different rules and regulations that govern how votes are counted.

I guess an analogy would be to listen to 51 conversations at the same time and attempt to piece them together to form one single conversation. Itā€™s designed for chaos.

It means it is in fact possible for a faithless elector to successfully defect, whereas in Nevada, the vote is canceled and the elector is replaced. In Michigan the vote is just canceled.

Another issue is that the federal government did not provide the adequate funds to handle the massive increase in mail-in voting.

The government knew that the count would take this long and be this chaotic and were hoping that some ā€œmistakesā€ would occur that would favor them.
