Gonna have to dig real deep now. Tomjanovic playing the match of her life.
That was a great match, a nice send-off for Serena.
Naomi Osaka has fallen off a cliff.
Is this like an Andy Murray British/Scottish situation in Japan? She’s Japanese when she wins and isn’t when she doesn’t.
It’s kind of like that, except based on my informal poll of local tennis fans, many weren’t really fans of hers (i.e. didn’t consider her Japanese) even when she was winning.
I think that Osaka just loves everything that the game of tennis has afforded her, except the game of tennis.
Osaka made like $100M in 2019 which made her the highest paid female athlete that year (ahead of Serena). She genuinely seems like the kind of person who does not enjoy the spotlight, so I can understand why after making that much money she doesn’t want to deal with all the crap that comes with being the center of attention in the sport.
Also it was great for her to put her mental health struggles out there and take time out of the game to deal with those. Takes a lot of courage to do that in the world of competitive sports.
Pretty sure US Open has always used a standard tiebreaker and hasn’t changed anything
Can’t believe Gasquet is still playing competitive tennis.
Seriously. I would have assumed it was Richard Gasquet Jr at this point, lol.
The score is not correct, it was 10-7. All four slams have the same rules now, 10-pt tiebreaker in the 5th (or 3rd for women’s/doubles matches)
They changed to 10 point TB in final sets now.
For USTA 40+ we do a 10 point in lieu of a 3rd set if the first two sets are split. Old players and long matches not the best combo.
Yahoo sports app has it wrong. Thanks for the clarification.
I’d love to see Wimbledon at least play to 9-9 in the fifth before going to the tie break, but the 10 point I think is good compromise.
I got up 5-0, then down 7-8, then won 10-7 in a singles match. 10 point gives time to recover from a bad stretch.
My former section (Southwest) did 10 pt 3rd set tiebreaker regardless of it being 18+ or 40+. In many of my singles matches I am not sure I could have gone for a full 3rd set tbh.
As captains we are still letting courts decide and a couple decided to play it out. But we have to record as 1-0.
FYI I’m on a summer team playing middle states sectionals next weekend. I am unlikely to play due to a sore elbow and less than stellar play (though I played much much better at practice today). I will be going over to assist the summer captain so he can focus on playing.
LOL Kyrgios
Cliffs?
Rifled a ball into the stands, hits about 6 inches from the top of the wall, plays at above peak Federer level thereafter
