No add blocker on Chrome because they have caused other problems at times. I just tried Firefox/Linux with a similar outcome. The video just stops playing and hitting play again just restarts it from the beginning.
I think it restarts videos any time a new post is added to the thread. The same way it reloads all the tweets in a thread when a new post is added. Something about how discourse is doing the real time thread updates would be my guess.

I have just seen it happen in this circumstance when someone else posted while I was watching a clip here. Also happened when I posted in the thread, though I guess that’s less surprising. Mystery seemingly solved, thanks.

I think that it was a xiaolongbao post, but when I refreshed it was gone. I thought that might happen which is why I took the screenshot first.
