Summer LC thread

Gotta say, my main computer is a pretty sick beast I had custom-built with the help of the excellent Logical Increments website. My main drive is a 500GB SSD and my bulk storage drive is a 2TB 7200rpm regular drive. I’ve been unable to discern any difference at all between the two. And I was super hyped to get an SSD, I was looking forward to… I dunno what exactly, but SPEED, basically. Not sure it made any difference to anything, in the end.

People are way too focused on Moore’s law. Of course it has to end. It was proposed based on a 1965 understanding of computer technology. Transistors are hitting limits. But molecular, DNA and quantum computing will surely make transistors obsolete.

The load times will be faster with ssd. If connected via sata III it may bottleneck also.

Uh, we’re always going to need some kind of transistor.

It’s pretty impressive how accurate Moore’s Law has been given that it was just a wild-ass guess. Right now IIRC IBM is producing transistors <10nm, there isn’t a whole lot of room to get smaller, but people are thinking about 3D architectures and other smart tricks. All things considered, Moore had an amazing run.

I think quantum computing and spintronics are things like cold fusion that perpetually are going to be just down the road, unless someone can figure out how to make them work at temperatures above 4mK. I don’t know anything really about DNA transistors. Seems like the would be too slow to work as an electronic device? idk.

Part of my job is in the field of “neuromorphic” computing, trying to make transistors that work the same way brain cells work, which is something that’s still in its infancy, but could make pattern recognition, AI, neural networks etc. etc. more efficient.

Sorry didn’t mean to suggest we wouldn’t need transistors. Just that Moore’s law likely won’t apply to things like quantum or DNA ones. I’m not near the expert you are though. Your job sounds pretty cool.

Homelessness is going to become a huge issue in the 2020 election, with a huge assist from the MSM, isn’t it? Fuck me. Another gigantic win for Republicans on a bullshit issue they don’t give a shit about and will forget a day after the election.

Both of these articles are great reads. Capitalism taken to its logical extreme may be the worst possible system.

HOW CAN YOU LAUGH AT VIOLENCE AGAINST PROPERTY?!!??

What has happened to civility in this once peaceful gentle country?

This is worse than the Trail of Tears, Slavery and My Lai combined

Guess they’re gonna treat the homeless the way they treat asylum seekers: put them in concentration camps.

Would be even better if there was a gun in back that was stolen.

It’s funny how the actual way to disprove Moore’s Law was for AMD to sit on their asses and not produce CPUs to compete with Intel for a few years.

My old friend from high school who became a Trump fan was talking about just killing the homeless (I heard through some other friends). He lives in suburban Tampa and probably never sees a homeless person. But apparently this thing is being pumped hard in alt-right circles or something. Scary stuff.

Homelessness is a huge problem to the right because it’s destroying property value, at least your old friend is being honest about their proposed solution.

The solution on my Nextdoor has moved from shipping them to LA to shipping them out of state.

Typical. Conservatives don’t give a fuck about homelessness. They just don’t like them hanging around being homeless since it lowers their property value to have them around.

Does it really though? There’s a few of them in my neighborhood but not enough to lower property values, same for Microbet’s I’m assuming.

Are Manhattan penthouses only worth $200M instead of $210M because of homelessness?

All the places I can think of that they cluster in LA and SF are gritty urban places with lofts and stuff - not exactly prime locations for the Republican base or Republican elites.
