Summer LC thread

Lots of people who are Islamist are awesome even though Islam is awful…

Maher is a religious bigot especially against Islam. Its one of the main reasons i stopped watching him.

He is against all religion.

National Ploughing Championships?

Hey… Ploughing is a serious sport.

No he is a bigot against all, but more so against Islam. Im actually surprised he has not joined the alt right atheist squad.

I like Maher’s takes on most things, but he’s just flat out bigoted and wrong about Islam. His point there about Islam being around 1000 years before the US is fucking stupid and emblematic of the Islamophobia. What’s crazy is that he’s generally anti-war, anti-empire, and the Islamophobia is the drum beat of war. He’s being a stooge.

He also uses apologetics in our responsibility in fanning the flames of the Islamic extremism he decries.

Basically an agricultural show. It’s massive. Over 100,000 attendees per day for three days. All sorts of oddballs.

Of course he has a super-boner for Israel on top of the anti-Islam sentiment.

I suspect Seinfeld and Maher share sensibilities. It’s just that Jerry doesn’t share his publicly.

To be fair, my only evidence is Seinfeld visiting a West Bank “anti-terror” camp in an Israeli settlement and taking pictures with the soldiers there

Friedan’s interviews with these women revealed the same patterns of seemingly idiopathic suffering over and over; depersonalization, intense anxiety, brain fog and disorientation, debilitating depression, erratic rage, hypochondriasis, racing thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and exhaustion. Some women exploded with anger, some cried all day, some slept all day, some doped themselves to the gills with tranquilizers, and some — as if overcome with a sort of domestic claustrophobia — just ran out of the house to wander the empty suburban streets, à la Lucy Jordan.

Friedan’s women, in their comfortable homes with their comfortable allowances, with all of that marvelous free time, were the biggest experiment in UBI the world has ever seen, and they were desperately, wretchedly unhappy, to the point of mental illness. Because that is what being paid off and discarded does to a person.

Like I’ve been saying that for a while when everyone says people will all become self-motivated artists if they didn’t have to work. Most of us just aren’t wired that way imo.

I had a job where I worked at home full time for a couple of years and got paid pretty well to do almost nothing. I was miserable. Maybe that’s an issue with me. But I don’t think I’m a big outlier on that.

Most of us are miserable w/o a purpose and someone in our family/tribe counting on us. Humans are hyper-social animals. I believe most of us are hard-wired with a need to feel important to our tribe. That’s also why I have so much awe for true artists. i think they’re driven by some completely different force that is unknown to me.

However - I could certainly work 3 days a week and still feel like I had a purpose. I pretty much do anyway with all the farting around on the internet.

Trivia time - w/o googling, what’s the largest tree dwelling animal currently living?

I’m against people who are against all religion.

Gonna go with orangutans (aka Donald Trump in ape form, except smarter)

Religion sucks. I get why most people need it. But I wish they didn’t.

NH sir

I think this is true but then the key to UBI is to make it significant enough that it actually helps folks and gives people some flexibility and freedom, but not enough to live anything more than the most abject miserable existence. Or perhaps a bit less than that. 1000 bucks a month seems a bit too much I think. But uncoupling health care from employment and providing it to all folks is more important than UBI to get the sort of benefits that Yang is talking about.

100% this.
