did those dumb expressionless Klingons ever stop yelling at each other for like ten straight minutes in a literally made up language?
I wanted to like Discovery. Ended up hating it. Put me in the cliche camp of âOrville is better Star Trek than Discovery isâ.
For me the craziest part in Star Trek was when we found out Darth Vader was Luke Skywalkers father like WTF!!!
No spoilers dammit
I was bothered by it for a little bit but then I took the approach that hey, theyâre deviating from something that used to bother me a tiny bit with TNG (a tiny bit mind you). Take away the makeup and the exposition, what was the difference between how Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians went about their business? Not much, they all seemed to be self-interested actors with only a few lip service cultural differences. I liked that STD tried to make the Klingons more alieny in other words.
It made the Klingons, their emotions, and their motivations so alien that the long scenes featuring them were totally inaccessible to me. So congrats I guess, show?
I think they did a good job of making their motivations clear, they were intense xenophobes mired in dynastic civil conflict, justifiably or not worried about the homogenizing ethos of Star Fleet. I ultimately got used to them not having emotions like I got used to Data or the Borg not having human emotions. Iâm of course not even disagreeing with you, Iâm just saying I was able to take that approach and it made it better for me.
But why couldnât they have just had the Klingons be intense Xenophobes while having expressive faces and speaking English? I donât get it. We would know that theyâre Not Actually speaking English, just like we know that the crew of the Red October arenât all speaking English with varying British accents. Ffs if I wanted to read for ten minutes Iâd pick up a newspaper.
Do you speak Spanish or did you not watch Narcos?
I only ever watched a couple of episodes of Orville but can we talk about the fact that itâs the best ST since DS9?
For me itâs very different watching Spanish language actors act in their native language. The meaning, emotion and inflection comes through. Klingon isnât a real language and you can tell that. Just like I could tell the actor who played Gus on Breaking Bad didnât actually speak Spanish.
The guy who played Pablo Escobar had to learn Spanish
but he did learn Spanish and speaks fluently. No STD actor learned Klingon, if thatâs even possible.
But in season 2 he basically had one emotion.
The Government isnât negotiating with you anymore Pablo
Los Pepes is killing your entire crew Pablo
Your wife couldnât get into Germany Pablo
Youâre down to 6k in cash Pablo
Narcos is 100% in my wheelhouse but that actor has only one expression for the entire fucking show and that expression is âdid someone fart?â Canât get into that show at all. Mexican telenovellas about drug dealers. are so much better.
Oh baby are we photoshop battling???
Damn, that looks real.
