Speeding and Traffic - Safe or Death?

Did the drive from Denver to Vegas once and pretty much had my foot to the floor the whole time I was in a heavily loaded cargo van that topped out around 85 and on any sort of uphill climb it wasn’t getting above 60. Seriously though I love that drive and the speed limit is 80MPH for pretty much the entire state of Utah, and 75MPH in all the straighter flatter parts of Colorado and Nevada.

A fellow rotor head! Civilian or you got your farts and darts?
I think driving 90 mph on the highway can be fine depending on the vehicle, weather, road surface, traffic and your ability as a driver. You agree?

The we’re in agreement and you can stop

You can if you’ve got at least 160 yards with good brakes and a dry road.
Do you just argue with everybody all the time?
I think you might have a thorn in your paw.

We were having a perfectly nice discussion until you misunderstood something no one else did, while being a jerk about it.

as a break from the trolling, is this the thread where I complain about people driving 20 mph on rural roads because they think their car is going to flip over if they take curves faster than that?

Can we please add a track day or some kind of requirement for drivers to learn how to actually drive their vehicles and that taking a curve designed for 50 mph at 50 mph is not going to send them careening off the road and flipping their car?

Instead, they go 20 mph and build up a line of pissed off people behind them, who then try to pass on said rural road, which in the end is probably more dangerous.

Also, STOP FUCKING BRAKING RANDOMLY! PEOPLE BEHIND YOU WILL NOT EXPECT IT AND RUN INTO YOU! (this is the general “you” not aimed at anyone in this thread)

If we’re going to complain about drivers in general, I must add those people who try to “be nice” be letting people go in front of them when they have the right of way.

THAT’S NOT HOW TRAFFIC FLOW IS DESIGNED. STOP IT.

So much of my frustration with other drivers is because they are not driving predictably.

Use your turn signals, pay attention, and take the correct action when it’s your turn to do so. I really don’t ask for much more than those three things.

B-but how else can you express to them how infuriated you are at them driving so slow? And scare them into either driving faster than they safely can, or slowing down even more?

I don’t think much will come of that; and on the speed alone they can’t get him. Bizarrely, such extreme runs are only possible with cars not registered in Germany, as you can’t register a car in Germany that is able to do more than 300 kph (186 mph). So I could see legislative change that outright forbids cars that can go that fast on German streets; that way they wouldn’t have to call it a speed limit.

Agree. I couldn’t find anything in the penal code that the driver violated. Driving recklessly is only punishable in a few enumerated instances and none of them apply.

That drive seems insane. What happens if one of those cars he passes goes into his lane?

According to the criminal code, a solo drive can still be classed as a prohibited race if the driver “advances at an inappropriate speed and in a manner that grossly violates the traffic code and is reckless.”

FWIW I doubt much will come of it but I suspect other drivers will be less minded to try similar, which is probably the point of referring to the prosecutors office.

It is already illegal to text or make a phone call (other than in an emergency) using a hand-held device while driving. Next year, laws will go further to ban drivers from using their phones to take photos or videos. This will mean anyone caught using their hand-held device while driving will face a £200 fixed penalty notice and 6 points on their licence.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:

Too many deaths and injuries occur while mobile phones are being held.

By making it easier to prosecute people illegally using their phone at the wheel, we are ensuring the law is brought into the 21st century while further protecting all road users.

While our roads remain among the safest in the world, we will continue working tirelessly to make them safer, including through our award-winning THINK! campaign, which challenges social norms among high-risk drivers.

Yeah - drivers know not to get caught with the phone up to their ear … but who’s got time to call people anyway when they’re busy tiktoking :)

Good chance people die.

I wish my pickup could still do the speed limit.

Based on what? Your opinion? Road speed limit? Yellow speed sign for that curve? The latter would be what one should go by, imo.

On my rural roads, I have out of state plates, so I don’t want to speed excessively. I’m usually 5-10 over the yellow speed signs for the curves. Acceptable?

5-10 is acceptable but ime you can add 20 to every yellow sign and you’ll be OK. Also yellow signs aren’t regulatory so you’ll be OK legally too. Probably.

Are there not speed cameras in the USA? They’re everywhere in Australia, fixed and not fixed.
