OK, cut off for entrants is tomorrow morning my time, so @mjiggy it’s almost time to throw your hat in. You know you want to.

Then Friday morning for categories, we’re just waiting on @m_hood115, @LouisCyphre, @SwankyWilder & @Nicholasp27.

Once categories are all in I’ll collect them together in one post and @ you all along with the submission details. I’m leaning towards a deadline of 29th of March for entries in, but open to discussion.

I would now also ask for a volunteer to receive and pass on the entries to my category.

Category Host Name: swankywilder

Category: A song from the year of your birth or your 18th Birthday

Musical Tastes: Pop, Reggae, Hiphop, dance, new wave, post punk, pre punk, only things i don’t really go for are Jazz and Metal, and I am willing to be convinced on those

Any other judging notes: I will be looking more kindly on anything I am less familiar with. Ideally something a bit out of left field with a bit of pop-sensibilty -if that actually means anything

Just to make sure I completely understand, whatever we submit should still be a category fit for the category we would be trolling, correct? Seems like that is the case based on

Yes.

To use an example, Pauwl’s electronic category explicitly says no techno/trance, so submitting that would be a huge penalty. Songs with lyrics are preferred, but not outright banned, so I might penalize instrumental songs less or maybe not at all, but I would probably give a higher rating to someone who could find a way to stay completely within the lines and give a judge the kind of song they say they want and yet make them regret it.

Category host name: Louis Cyphre

Category: A song that references science, philosophy or religion in the lyrics, song title, artist’s name or album title. The song will be primarily judged by how much I like it but I reserve the right to hand out bonus points for category fit or use it as a tie-breaker.

Musical tastes: I mainly listen to rock and metal (from vanilla to extreme) and their siblings, cousins and bastards. I also listen to pop, hip-hop, some classic, a tiny bit of opera and I can generally find something I like in most genres.
Basically no-hoper genres: hardcore techno/gabber, Operetta
Dubious genres: Electronic (although some electronic music did well in the previous categories I judged), Jazz, country/western, disco, RNB, Soul

Any other judging notes:
There are two rules that if broken will lead to a low score.

  1. The song should not annoy me.
  2. The song should not bore me.

Warning: I might judge very well-known songs harshly.

I made a Google Doc of my previous submissions and rankings .
Maybe this can give you an idea what to submit and what to avoid.

If possible include a Spotify link in your submission.

not sure i fully understand this category. do you need to know they were good for 2 decades or just believe us?

I think he kind of answered your question here.

I might be missing something, but isn’t the whole game to pick music that’s good (in our opinion) that we hope is also good (in their opinion)?

which makes the category just pick a song from someone who hasn’t died in the first 11 years of their career.

True but usually we only need to think that this one song is good and hope they agree instead of judging their career arc.

I guess. I suppose he’s trusting us to choose people we genuinely think have had a solid 11+ year career, which isn’t everyone with 11+ year careers.

that’s my question. is that part of the category, @cassette’s judgement on the artist’s career? what if he doesn’t know the artist?

I understood it that he defaults to trusting us. I guess it’s best if he clarifies.

@Yuv I’m not going to do any homework and check up on your picks. It’s the honor system unless I know for sure you picked something ineligible.

Here’s the idea: pick a song by a band that was good for a long time. I was originally going to ask for a band that was good in the 90s and still good now, but then decided to make it easier.
