Severance on Apple TV+

Oh, they’ve definitely got real problems. But I’m thinking that instead of giving them the real stuff to help them conceive, he gave them some fake shit so that Gemma would be even more vulnerable and susceptible to Lumon’s offer.

That’s totally possible.

I know this is nitty, but whatever.

It seems really far fetched that Helena’s dad, who is from a long line of nepobabies is the dude that invented severance. I’m just going to assume he just hired some actually smart people to do the work and he took the credit in true failson fashion.

I’m sorry you never qualified.

Yes, I think that is correct. We now have two examples suggesting that Lumon preys on vulnerable people - last episode when Burt was at dinner with Irv, it was suggested that they infiltrated or established churches to leverage peoples’ religious beliefs (if you are worried about your soul, your innie can go to heaven, just sign here to enroll!) and in this episode we see them inflitrating or establishing a fertility clinic to get access to desperate people that are struggling to conceive.

We first find out about OTC when Dylan grabs the card while on a MDR excursion to Optics & Design. That’s an issue of such apparent importance that Milchick triggers OTC to find out where it is and get it back.

I don’t understand why the theft of the card was a big enough deal to warrant such an extreme reaction. I think part of it was Milchick being desperate to not have his poor management revealed. But if he’s entirely on his own with this, who triggered OTC when he was with Dylan in his outie’s closet?

Call me mr nitpick if you like but mark and gemma seemed to be living in a nice warm sundappled paradise. I kept think mark must have chosen to move after the accident to the frozen fucking tundra. But we see him get the news and last season he went a seemingly short distance to visit the crash site. So much for global warming i guess.

I went back and watched Burt’s retirement and couldn’t find any tells. In his video Burt certainly doesn’t seem like a man being fired and forced to make a fake video. And his innie doesn’t seem upset at all about dying, which is what retirement effectively means for an innie. At one point Milchick is about to kick Irv out of the party but Burt convinces him to let Irv stay, which was the only indication I saw that Burt might be more than a run-of-the-mill employee.

Gemma’s airplane innie: oh, poor you

+1. And I’m having a hard time coming up with a satisfying explanation (including your hypotheses). Hopefully they give us more on this.

I’m not counting on that. Milchick is definitely keeping the incident hidden from Cobel, Dylan throws that in his face in S1E7 to get him to back off. I think it was probably just a clunky (for this show) device to introduce OTC with the minor plot hole of wondering who triggered it if Milchick was at Dylan’s house. I doubt we hear about it again.

That’s not the only way to tie that up, though. They could come up with an explanation about why the card is more important than it seems (based on what we’ve seen so far). In that case, maybe the order for recovery (and even finding out that he took it) came from someone else higher up and Milchick is just playing his role in the recovery plan.

I hope the acting in this show isn’t getting overlooked. It’s such a fascinating, creative, suspenseful story that the tremendous acting performances could get lost.

Dichen Lachman’s (Gemma) performance was heartbreaking in this last episode. Adam Scott brings it every episode. And man, every scene with Tuturro and Walken is just great.

And I really hope Tramell Tillman’s career skyrockets with this.

I just had an epiphany. I’m sure that someone else has probably had this thought. But the last time I saw Lachman, she was in another TV series (Dollhouse) in which she played a severed character!

Is she typecast as a severed person? Seems like a weird coincidence.

If you’re not familiar with that show, the thing they do is not identical to severing, but it’s pretty fucking close.

She also played (well) in the surprisingly entertaining Monarch (Godzilla Universe) show on Apple+, where she was not severed.

I think we may have already seen this. In the last episode, Gemma’s background story showed that she was sucked into Lumon when she went to the fertility clinic, after which they sent her one of these cards in the mail (Mark asks her why she’s wasting her time with it). It’s possible that there is either a general reason they freaked out about the card (the cards are part of their broad program to manipulate vulnerable people in the outside world and suck them into Lumon’s cult) or a specific reason (they are worried that Mark will somehow make the specific connection between the cards and Gemma).

Ms Huang is Mark and Gemma’s daughter, right?

Oh, the “Dream sweet” line was an amazing bit of writing. Really sticking with me.
