Shipbuilding is almost impossibly good on every level. I could easily have submitted Costello’s own version of the song which is just as good, Robert Wyatt’s voice is the deciding factor for me, though.
Yeah I actually went and checked out Costellos version as well but for me Wyatts voice elevates the song to another level. I preferred his timing as well. It’s a real gem and far removed from something I would normally have stumbled upon.
Listened to them all on the way to work. I enjoyed Bandelero quite a bit. Was also nice to hear Bright Eyes again, hadn’t thought about them for years but I saw them supporting Arab Strap once and they were sensational. Was one of the best gigs ever, in fact, with Arab Strap also on imperious form, and when we clapped for an encore that didn’t come the crowd refused to disperse on lights up, and some flunky had to get on mike a couple of times and plead with us to piss off home.
Todays reveal will be Category 3: A song you like that is 3 minutes or less.
I’m glad I chose this as one of the categories. The “repeatable” category was a little more timely to work through, and this category didn’t allow for drawn out 33 minute submissions only played once by a now-extinct tribe from Botswana coughPyatnitskicough.
In 6th place with 1 point, RiskyFlush - Green Day - “All By Myself (Hidden Track)”
This song is SILLY!
YOU’RE SILLY RISKYFLUSH!!!
You know…it’s a song, but it’s not reeeaallly a song now is it? But with that said, this still made me smile every time I listened to it. I feel like I am meant to roast this submission, but can’t because it made me happy. I have to put this in last, but I am still glad you submitted this RiskyFlush. You silly sausage.
In 5th place with 2 points we have Pyatnitski - Tony Molina - “Nothing I Can Say”
A nice little ditty that sounds like the backing music you might use in a movie scene. Perhaps while someone is staring pensively across a college campus at some unrequited love, or waking up and taking their morning tinkle, or even some combination of those two things. A pleasant track, it just didn’t offer as much to keep me coming back for more listens as the remaining submissions.
In 4th place and gaining 3 points, Cassette - Propagandi - “Less Talk, More Rock”.
This could very easily be on the podium and to be honest I had a difficult time placing the top 4. A nice crunchy punk song with ridiculous lyrics that grew on me the more I listened to it. I feel like you and I would have a lot of overlapping musical interests, we just haven’t found the right track to land on each others podium just yet. Relistening to it right now as I do the reveal its got another bump from “this is fun” to “this is going into my playlist”. Propagandi seem pretty adjacent to some other punk stuff I like. I think you’re a little unlucky with 4th here.
Yeah, much to the fury of goat pyatnitski I think its the fact that it was short that meant it didn’t have the time to become “more” for me. That probably doesn’t make much sense, but I liked it and felt like if it was turned into a 4 minute song I would have liked it more.
