SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

News from Canada:

  • Ontario has declared a state of emergency; all bars, restaurants, movie theatres, libraries, gyms, rec centres and daycares to be closed until March 30 at the earliest. Take-out, delivery and drive-thru only at eateries.

  • WestJet (2nd-largest airline) is suspending all international flights as of Sunday. This is of particular interest to me as my wife’s dumbass cousin jetted off to Mexico on the weekend and rebuffed all warnings to get home immediately.

But what if I need to lift heavy things to live

Our town manager broadcast a phone call last night, and he made a point of saying that the golf course is open for now, because it’s small groups. I live in the Boston suburbs, and it’s snowing this morning. :man_shrugging:

I feel that golf courses are one of the few things that should stay open. At most you’re exposed to four people, but if done right you can easily stay away. Just give everyone their own cart and only one person on green at a time, etc.

Of course, in practice people likely will be idiots and still congregate, but if they do that on a golf course, they are likely doing that everywhere else.

I don’t want to go to the gym right now, but I would like to be a bug on the wall in my gym. The gym owner is such a Trumpkin and for five years I’ve had to hear about how great Trump is and the “Trump economy” etc. Last time I was there it was all about “a Chinese plot to take down Trump” and tank the market. Next day I bought some barbells.

RIP USPS

Just wait until you become obese then do bodyweight squats as a power lifting exercise.

Did Amazon not just announce they were hiring thousands of new warehouse staff?

Managed to find a floating wifi hotspot. £18 for 5 days lol plus I had to go and buy a dongle because who uses wifi when ethernet cables are right there.

Just to remove the bodies of the previous workers that have succumbed to Covid.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon takes down the market another 10% or so by itself. That’s a huge part of the economy (remember all the businesses that sell goods on Amazon, big and small) completely shut down.

Guess Spain is the new Italy.

Speak for yourself lol.

Don’t worry, COVID-19 deaths will peak around 1,000 per day. It’s going to be one hell of a bad flu season, though.

Just had a semi happy thought as I gazed out on deserted Parisian streets, maybe this will take down lots of grey and black market Airbnb landlords. That’d be a shame.

I’d take that amazon news with a serious grain of salt. I can’t find any confirmation online. Just stories about them hiring to keep up with demand.

Looks like they are just prioritizing medical supplies for shipment to their distribution Centers which makes a lot of sense.

Yeah I stocked up a month ago and a bunch of people said I was panicking. Including people in ITT, but more so IRL.

In any case, I tired to get my dad to stock up as well, but no cigar. So now me and my siblings are going to have to do their food and medication shopping. He is almost 80 and the primary caregiver to my mom, who is bedridden and living at home with some end of life hospice care and a severely compromised immune system. At least until hospice stops coming, which I’m expecting is soon. (He told me they keep losing staff over the last two weeks.)

MIL in NC is living at home with care 24/7 with life expectancy of a few months. Not sure what happens when the nurses stop coming. I guess my SIL will have to become the primary caregiver 24/7. Or my wife will somehow have to get down there, leaving only me with my daughter and nobody to take care of her if I get sick while my wife is gone.

But you know, Lapka told me to suck it up and enjoy myself so I should stop worrying.

Agreed, to the extent there is any merit to it I’d bet it is just a temporary measure to prioritize household staples/medical equipment to meet overwhelming demand.

So amzn is prioritizing Staples and medical stuff. Half true basically.
