SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

I never in any universe could have even imagined I would say that I wish Ted Cruz was president right now. But here we are.

DJT: it looks like it’s heading to 50,000 deaths, which is a lot. But if you look at automobile accidents, which are far greater numbers than what we’re talking about here, we don’t tell people that they can’t drive anymore.

“Old people dying on hospital floors is just one of those things we’ll have to put up with to get the economy moving again. We don’t shut it down for car crashes. Look how many people get killed in those”

It tastes the same

The unemployed people can be retrained to take the jobs of the dead people.

Lol 50k. We’ll hit 50k in a week before the summer is over.

If the global economy shuts down, would that force the US economy to shut down whether or not the Dotard wants it to stay open?

I agree but still surprised that he threw that number out there unprompted

he said the flu is very bad this year, they say 50,000 (deaths)

He’s gonna blame US deaths on the flu not COVID-19

It’s a number he knows that Americans could accept. We wouldn’t be able to accept tanking the total casualties of the Vietnam war every week for 1.5 years… Which is what will probably happen.

Elderly ‘dead and abandoned’ in Spanish care homes

Soldiers tackling Spain’s coronavirus epidemic by disinfecting residential care homes have found a number of elderly people abandoned and left for dead in their beds, the country’s defence minister has said.

The news comes as Spain’s death toll from the disease rose from 1,720 on Sunday to 2,182. The total number of confirmed cases has increased to 33,089.

"The army has seen some totally abandoned elderly people – even some who were dead in their beds,” Margarita Robles told the Ana Rosa TV programme.

Those responsible would be met with “the full weight of the law”, the minister added.

Good god we are going to be at 500 deaths a day and not look back in the next few days. How dumb are people.

That sounds like the flu you’re talking about. Official CV death numbers are gonna be lower than you’ve ever seen, believe me folks!

Just got sent this my my hair dresser. I’m not convinced.

Reckon I’m gonna be rocking the coronamullet and an out of control beard for the duration.

If we are going to be fighting over the scraps of civilisation then I want my intimidation factor to be high.

Hi all, long time lurker (acct on 2+2 is from 2003/4?), and just followed the forum over to this incarnation.

Lived in the US then, big politics buff, currently living in Indonesia. I find this forum possibly one of the best source for Covid19 info (and politics, of course), and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

The Indonesian president made the same mistakes as Trump at the beginning of this pandemic. Trying to play down the dangers, stimulate economy, etc. Compounded with general corruption and incompetence, there have been no widespread testing, contact tracing, etc. So far the gov’t said they have done about 3,000 tests. All of them performed by 1 lab in Jakarta, with turn around time of up to 7 days.

Initially there were about 130 govt hospitals designated for Covid19 patients, however it was revealed that there were only 88(!) ventilators between them. This is a country of 260+ million people. Safe to say that if you are one of the 5% that need critical care here, it is a death sentence.

Now that the situation is getting worse all over the world, the gov’t has finally purchased more test kits, currently stated to be 500,000 units of the rapid anti-gen test kits. But this is not a gov’t that is used to operating efficiently or rapidly, so we’ll see if they can deploy it quickly. Also at this time 500k is probably nowhere near enough.

Currently there are only 579 official cases and 49 official deaths here, but with barely any testing, who knows what the actual number is. Even with only relatively few cases, the pandemic has already taken the lives of 7 doctors, owing to lack of PPE, and lack of testing means medical professionals are fighting blind. In a country with only 0.4 doctors/1000, this is catastrophic.

There are very few social distancing/lock down measures in place. None of them have the force of law behind them, only suggestions. Regional govts frustrated by the central govt’s inaction, have individually ordered shutting down schools and work from home where they are able. However, without a nationwide ban on travel, this had the predictable results of people flocking towards tourist destinations, etc.

Nor would any lock down measures be feasible here. There are no social safety nets, and a large percentage of people live a day-by-day existence. The situation is dire.

The president, in an attempt to avert panic (?), announced that the gov’t is purchasing millions of doses of Chloroquine and Avigan.

Chloroquine is available here, produced locally, and usually available without prescription. It is super cheap, a 12x200mg CQ sulphate strip was about $2. It has since doubled/tripled in price. I am hoping CQ will indeed have the effect it showed in early trials (I’ve read the one by Didier Raoult, and it is flimsy, so I’m managing expectations), because it may be the only hope for this country.
