Tomorrow I’m going to see how many pushups I can do. Today, the scale reads 181.4.
I still love me a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch though, I’ll buy a box every month or two
I used to like Honey Nut Cheerios big is suspect I would find them too sweet now.
182.6, after a lot of vegetables. … Just tried to do some pushups. The result was humbling. I quit when they started to not be good pushups…
Total tally was 15 though I could make the case that a pain in my wrist was a bigger factor than fatigue, and vaccine side effects including muscle pains hit me the other day. Of course, you could also make the case that I’m just really, really out of shape. … but 15 is a tough number to swallow. Shit.
15 with good form is not bad. Most people who do tons of push-ups do tons of terrible push-ups.
Yeah doing real push-ups is pretty hard, 15 isn’t bad. the dudes ripping off 500 of them while they move their body about 6 inches up and down are not doing push ups
Disappointing initial results are to be expected. Good news is fast improvement follows if you stick with it. However, don’t ignore this
I got some push-up bars, which help a lot.
I have typical hexagonal dumbbells which are also good for this purpose - since they are rubber coated and flat, they are just as stable as the handles and serve the same function.
This morning, 182.6 (-0.5%)
Actually, it’s like -.44% or something, I forget, but fuck that.
Summer is going to be a change, it’s obvious. Went out this weekend to a brewery and beer garden. I’m drinking a lot less, but I can see how easy it will be to get back into old habits.
After 2 months of healthy(ier) eating, check out the change in glide path…
Basically, no change in weight since April 21.
5/10 - 178.6 (-2.6%)
Whoa, what happened last week? … I think there’s some dehydration in there, but I weighed in a couple of other times this last week and things were moving the right direction. 182 on 5/4, 179.4 on 5/9 …
I got more exercise this past week. Walked 6+ miles on a few days and yesterday and worked on the woodpile…
That’s 2.84 lb/week.
I gotta get me a woodpile. Unless working on the woodpile is some kind of euphemism. Then, I really gotta.
Chopping wood is outrageously good exercise. Even simulating the motion on a cable machine is a terrific exercise.
lol at myself but …
Even simulating the motion on a cable machine is a terrific exercise.
this pains me. Doesn’t the cable machine simulate chopping wood? … but yeah, chopping wood is awesome and frankly, a ton of fun, particularly if you’re seeing it thru the whole way, from cutting down the trees to warming your house.
I’m gonna totally rough guestimate it would take 7 cords of wood to heat this house through the winter. So.
super fit.
ETA: I do not intend to put away 7 cords
I live in the country and when we chop up falken trees we just put the wood at the end of the driveway and people will take it for camping.
I picked some up like that yesterday! Yeah, that’s pretty common around here. Though it is often not the most desireable wood and sometimes has been sick. Upstate NY has a real problem with sick trees.
Talked to a friend on Monday evening and they asked, “have you managed to keep the weight off?” … it caught me off-guard, since it’s still less than 3 months since I even sarted losing weight.
So, 178.0 today, 179,4 on Tuesday, so just to keep a running Mondays-comparison let’s estimate 179.6 on 5/17 (didn’t weigh myself that day)…
5/17 - 179.6 (+0.6%)
5/10 - 178.6 (-2.6%)
5/-3 - 182.6 (-0.5%)
4/26 - 183.4 (-0.5%)
4/19 - 184.0 (-1%)
4/12 - 185.8 (-1.6%)
4/05 - 188.8 (-1.7%)
4/29 - 192.0 (-1.9%)
4/22 - 195.6 (-4.1%)
4/15 - 203.8 (+1%)
3/08 - 202.2 (-2.3%, week to week)
3/01 - 207.0 (start)
Definitely can see the challenge of summertime, been going out more, eating more. Had a great weekend, including driving 30 miles for tacos …
a local chef did cochinita pibil … sadly only average, as were the two cocktails. too much oil/fat still coming off the meat? needed an acid, and salt …
still digging my own food more …
(lentil tacos with red onion and broccoli)
Trip report from Saranac Lake … my gf and I went this weekend, about a 5 hour drive north. Basically, we just wanted to get out of town. We had been discussing a trip for maybe six weeks, but of course planning was confusing because all this is happening as vaccines roll out.
So from Friday-Sunday I said “fuck it” and ideas of “healthy” went out the window. Omg … I needed that. Drank all the beers, all the whiskey, ate all the tacos.
It felt like coming home. No, things are not totally back to normal but you can see how quickly we will get there. Lots of “Vaccinated? No mask needed” in restaurants and some stores, and lots of “Masks STILL needed” places, also. A mix of folks, wearing or not wearing, outside. Lots of the awkward motions to masks as people try and navigate proximity to others… I expect this will all pass soon.
Saturday breakfast I had the BEST GODDAMN BISCUIT I’ve had in years …
Liked it so much we went back the next day and it was totally average … end of the dough, barely the same biscuit …
Had some watermelon today, but otherwise fasting … 1st watermelon of the season was pretty good (better than the photos look), all things considered. I give it a B. …
Weighed this morning at …
Results oriented: Happy it’s still under 180!
Bummer: I suspect “real” weight is higher and I’m getting some help from dehydration. That watermelon might add 4 pounds…
lol, my weight today, 176.2 … I was actually pretty active yesterday, walked about 7 miles and spent a little time working outside … all I ate yesterday was watermelon. …I assumed my body would hang no to all of that liquid, as I felt pretty dehydrated. So, I dunno. Bodies are weird.
So, I can formally say now that after 3 months, 30+ pounds down …
This app seems to think my “normal” weight begins around 175. … that seems low to me. Maybe I’ll think and feel differently if I get closer to that point, but if I recall from a while back @ 175 I was feeling damn fit.
… I do not feel “damn fit.”
It turns out – I can see this now – that I really was borderline obese, 3 months ago. Like, low-side, but definitely not just carrying around a few extra pounds. … And now? I am still a bit overweight, frankly. I can see it, and I can feel it. In a way, it’s even easier to observe now.
Losing 30 in 3 months is a lot, of course. Mostly, it shows how grossly I was over-eating in 2020. … and how healthy weight is possible without starving yourself – though it is much easier if you enjoy cooking and eating somewhat healthy.
Keys for me …
-
Alcohol … sugar with a side of poison. Delicious and fun though. I’ve learned a lot about my alcohol consumption in the past months, and how it makes me feel. There are volumes that are “worth it,” and those which aren’t. Lots of factors at play, and you never feel better the next morning. Also, drunk me eats like drunk me.
-
Bread. … I love bread and baking, but I struggle with how to moderate consumption. I have experimented with baking smaller loaves, freezing bread, throwing out what I am unlikely to use … there’s nothing inherently wrong with bread of course, but when I bake it myself there’s a tendancy to eat the whole loaf. … my oven is pre-heating now, actually.
-
Movement. … exercise? I dunno, sure. Mostly, movement. … “Exercise” leaves me feeling like I need to eat, whereas after walking an hour I can just drink some tea … exercise with purpose. The woodpile is great, and fun and satisfying, AND a workout. … Walking 5-6 miles a day REALLY facilitates weight loss. But that’s a 2 hour commitment, basically, and that’s a lot.
-
Patience and consistency. … Is 3 months a long time? No, not really. Unless you’re unhappy. So, losing weight can’t be a chore, can’t be something painful … I need to find that sweet spot to stay in it. … losing this weight for me was not about effort but about finding equilibrium.

Believe in your ability to change, including changing the things you want and like. And know you can make that change intentionally.
I got that same scale like a month ago to replace one that seemed to be getting flakey. Even though there’s more info than just weight, I’m not sure it’s much better than the old one. New one reads a little lower with more consistent day to day numbers.
I eat a little more bread since I started baking a few months ago. In the past, binging would have been a problem but atm it isn’t. Not sure what’s different.
