I don’t think there is drama between posters if appeals to authority aren’t invoked. If one poster really doesn’t want to engage the other, there is a function for that. So the engagement is voluntary.
The reason things simmer down in crypto thread is because no one is calling for actions to be taken out on others. Or they’ve muted folks they don’t care to read.
If MrWookie, cuse, and CN were rapid pro crypto posters, I believe that thread would full of drama if Churchill, SK, Jal, and other “enemies of the state” were posting the exact same posts that you, me, RM, Suzzer, others have made. Just change the poster names and not a single post, and that thread becomes the epicenter of forum drama.
Would you say then that people should be discouraged from reporting posts? Or from frivolously reporting posts in a way that weaponizes moderation? I guess I don’t have a huge problem with that but I’m skeptical it’s really the root cause of the rancor.
I agree with you that people could in theory voluntarily disengage and ignore. But that isn’t happening. Jal could voluntarily stop sending abusive pms but that ain’t happening either.
These fights are so boring but I simply can’t let the actual history be forgotten. I bent over backwards to work with sabo. I initiated a joint thread to address his supposed issues with the forum. I drafted the op. I had dozens of pms with him. When he started trolling his own fucking thread I still defended him in the thread and via pm. I begged him in stop. BEGGED! him to stop trolling his own thread and he refused.
I have never in my life put in more effort to engage and work with someone I disagreed with online.
What I got back was zero effort, trolling, mocking me for it and even stealing my avatar and name.
It’s possible I am wrong and sabo is a really good guy. All I can do is sleep well in the knowledge I went way way way out on a limb for him and got back not one ounce of good faith.
I don’t see how anyone sane could view that as him being anything more than the most talented and disruptive troll I’ve run across in my 30 years online.
Once again for the record. Permanent bans should be only used in the most extreme cases like sabo. Churchill should not be banned.
Do we? Iron and wheatrich are the most right-wing posters I can think of and they are clearly center-left. Maybe Bobman? But I think he just posts about like tech and current events and doesn’t really wade into the political stuff.
Everyone knows your view of what happened in that thread. I disagree with that view. But it’s irrelevant. That’s shifting the goalposts from you constantly telling everyone bizarre lies about Sabo the irl organizer having no sincere beliefs and existing only to troll people the way you think you got trolled, to the point you’re 100% sure he’s posting the N word on Trump forums right now as part of his long game to wait for the exact right moment to wreak havoc as a troll.
The fact that people can lose all objectivity and become so absurdly delusional about Sabo should be cause for internal reflection, but instead everyone just doubles down on external projection.
You come across as believing that your POV is so common sense that anyone who disagrees with you must either be trolling or maliciously evil. You saw him as trolling. I saw it more as postmodern musings that make people with your worldview uncomfortable. Maybe you’re just mad because you couldn’t get him to concede anything to you.
The only reason that Sabo is banned is that he worded his poll in the most obnoxious way possible. If he phrased it like a normal person it would have been an easy clear. Maybe unfair but that’s on him.
I mean do you remember the poll? My point is that if the question was “ban sabo or no” he would have likely won with over 60%. I don’t know if you’re taking issue with my specific wording, but I don’t think calling out people for being dicks is a problem and that was definitely a big aspect of his posting style.
For me I’m just not going to silently watch people spew vicious lies about a friend not here to defend himself. May be a leak and similar to things I’ve said make the board worse when others do similar, but that’s my explanation
