Resolving Forum Disputes: Yes it’s another poll

Well people interpreting jokes as “trolling” certainly explains why so many of you humorless scolds seem to despise me.

To the extent that these new “arbiters” have any power, this is flawed for the reasons mentioned above. Practically it would not make any sense.

If these new arbiters are a powerless appeal board, it may have some minimal value but its value would likely be swamped by the added hierarchy that this forum needs less of, not more of.

I have worked in and been associated with organizations that have an “ombudsman” (ombudsperson?) and that seemed to work fairly well. The ombudsman has no power and no authority but serves as a meta-commenter and potential sounding board/listener to all sorts of issues that could arise. They would occasionally get involved with “resolving” disputes but that was not their main purpose.

I have no problem with you. You are normally kinda funny. All I am respectfully requesting is a little understanding of context. This isn’t a good time or place for jokes.

Can’t we please table this idea for the moment?

There are two other “efforts” under way that this effort is not in sync with and seems to be preventing from moving forward:

  • Establishing RFC and rule-making protocols
  • Instituting term limits on mods (rotating mods, etc.).

I guess another straw poll on another approach can’t hurt, but it doesn’t make sense to me particularly at this time.

is it proper to wait until your “side” of a vote takes a narrow lead to lock a voting thread?

  • yes, mods control exactly when a poll ends on a case by case basis depending on whether they like the result at the time
  • no, but there’s nothing the community can do about it because the mods have already couped and self-governance is an illusion

80% threshold for confirmation is picked out of thin air. there was a vote ongoing for less than 2 days on this very issue. is this thread binding?

This is surely true. All this does is make mod mods, who are just different mods who do even less but mostly the same thing, permanent by official policy.

Better to have a process where a poster can make a poll that overrides a mod decision.

If you wanted the existing mods to not have permanent control you could have had that if you put your beloved reputation behind mod rotation instead of your vote to become pope.

i’ve got plenty of reputation to support both thank you

About half the bans for less than one day are contentious. This forum simultaneously thinks that mods should actively stop poster bickering and personal attacks, people should stop complaining about moderation and we should have a court case half the time someone gets banned for 6 hours. Also people want less drama.

She briefly had a bf in France. That was a couple years ago now. Commie bf is here and they met here. He was born in Germany, but moved here when he was a kid. His mom is American and Dad is German.

Lock it up! We’re done here.

Not exactly germane here, but reminds me of “no signed paper can hold the iron” and I love this scene.

IOW, there is iron in your words of life.

Keed has not posted since this post. Is he ok?

You’re not helping.
