It’s theorized that Premier had a formula for making his beats.
Here’s one that is a little different with the break down near the end
Here’s Dilla doing his best premo impression. Legend has it Dilla figured out his process.

Theme for today: the weird hardcore hip hop scene in Philly centered around Jedi Mind Tricks. JMT’s producer Stoupe makes grandiose sounding beats with a lot of ominous classical music samples and suchlike.
I mostly want to post this killer verse from R.A. The Rugged Man. Nice eerie kind of beat from Stoupe, JMT frontman Vinnie Paz’s verse is very forgettable, but then Rugged Man drops a bomb. He tells the story of his father’s tour in Vietnam, which is why the verse opens with him saying “true story”. In the course of the verse he raps in such a way as to imitate helicopters and machine guns and so on, much as Hendrix did with his guitar in the famous Star Spangled Banner performance. It’s a really unique verse, I’ve never heard anything else like it. If you’ve never heard it before, strap in.
I’m not a big JMT fan or anything but I do like this pair of tracks named after the first two Mongol Khans, good showcase of Stoupe’s production style.
Finally, here’s a track from JMT affiliates Outerspace with Vinnie Paz doing the bridges, it’s not produced by Stoupe but you can hear that it’s part of this same subgenre. Very entertaining verse from Immortal Technique composed of lunatic conspiracy theories.
EDIT: There’s a copyright claim voiceover at the end of this that is super annoying but it’s the only copy I can see on YouTube. Fire it up on Spotify if you can.
Violent by Design and Black Helicopters are the picks of that whole scene for me.
Imma listen to that track now thinking about that anecdote.
One of El Ps rawest beats ever is Simian Drugs with Ill Bill. It has a slur though so I will just post the instrumental when that thread gets started.
I only heard that Outerspace track recently and I currently have that Immortal Technique verse on loop tbh. The conspiracy punchlines like “genetically… engineered… H I V” are so perfectly matched to the beat.
Violent by Design is one of my favorite albums, not a huge fan of Vinnie but Jus Allah and Stoupe are amazing. Also like some of the JMT affiliate group stuff (Outerspace, Army of thr Pharoahs), wish I wasn’t at work right now I’d post some tracks
Fuck it I’ll do it on my phone
Kool G Rap feature. Love the description here, this is what rap would have sounded like in the baroque era
Some extra Rugged Man greatness
Black Helicopters is a great track too
RA is coming to my town and I know the owner of the establishment he’s playing at. Going to get an afterparty going at the owner’s house or my house and get him over if possible. He plays the next night 3 hours away.
This post reminded me of this 12” exclusive form Canadian rappers Swollen Members.
@clovis8 gets a mention for obvious reasons.
Also +1 for correct use of baroque over the classical misnomer.
